Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

Back in Virginia, the fallout was swift and merciless.

With Derek, Patricia, and Jenna held without bail in federal custody in Miami awaiting extradition, base legal and civilian prosecutors tore through their finances.

The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) is a powerful federal shield designed to protect deployed soldiers from predatory lenders, unlawful foreclosures, and civil judgments while serving overseas. Because Derek had used forged documents to encumber our home and drain our assets while I was deployed under active combat orders, the hammer of the law fell with crushing weight.

Within forty-eight hours, the forged equity loan against my home was declared completely null and void by a federal judge. The fraudulent life insurance policy was revoked and turned over as State’s Exhibit A for the fraud indictment.

Every single pawn shop Derek had visited was served with search warrants.

Detective Bell personally visited the hospital on my second day back, carrying a velvet-lined wooden box.

"We recovered them, Major," Bell said, handing me the box with a gentle smile.

I opened it. Inside lay my grandmother’s platinum wedding band, my mother’s diamond pendant, and Lily’s small silver christening bracelet.

Tears blurred my vision. I pressed the cold metal to my chest, whispering a quiet thank-you to the universe.

In the hospital bed, Lily was sitting upright, coloring a picture of a golden retriever with bright yellow crayons. Her cheeks had regained their rosy glow, and her appetite had returned with a vengeance.

"Mama?" she asked, looking up from her drawing.

"Yes, my sweet girl?"

"Are we going back to our house?"

I sat beside her, gently brushing her soft curls behind her ear. "No, baby. We’re going to stay in a nice, bright guest cottage on the base for a little while. And then we’re going to pick out a brand-new house with a huge backyard and a swing set."

Lily smiled, her eyes lighting up. "Can we get a puppy?"

May you like

"The biggest, fluffiest puppy you can find," I promised, kissing her forehead.
