Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Nolan

"Good morning, Derek," I said, stepping into the lounge.
The two U.S. Marshals moved swiftly past me, fanning out to block both exits. Agent Vance stepped forward, displaying her gold federal credentials.
"Derek Nolan, Patricia Nolan, and Jenna Nolan," Vance said, her voice cutting through the lounge like a razor. "We have federal warrants for your arrest issued by the Eastern District of Virginia, alongside state felony warrants for aggravated child endangerment."
Jenna shrieked, dropping her phone. "What?! Derek, what did you do?! You said she couldn't touch us out here!"
"Shut up, Jenna!" Patricia hissed, recovering her venom as she scrambled to her feet. She pointed a manicured, trembling finger at me. "Hannah! You have crossed the line! You marched military personnel onto a civilian vessel to intimidate us? Do you know who my brother is? He’s a state representative in North Carolina! You will be stripped of your rank before the week is out!"
"Your brother already issued a statement this morning, Patricia," Agent Vance said calmly, pulling a pair of handcuffs from her belt. "He stated he has no connection to your financial affairs and urged you to surrender peacefully."
Patricia's face turned the color of chalk.
Derek slowly backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the ocean. His eyes were wide, bloodshot with panic.
"Hannah... please," he pleaded, his hands held up. "It was just an investment plan. I was doing it for Lily’s future! The private school in Georgia... it was top tier! You’re always away! What was I supposed to do?"
"You left her alone for three days, Derek," I said, walking toward him until I was just two feet away. "She was eating dry cereal off the floor. She thought she was being punished because she didn't know where you went."
"I told Evelyn—"
"Evelyn gave the police the ring camera footage," I interrupted. "We heard you tell your mother that Lily would be fine if you turned the water pressure down so she wouldn't flood the sink. You planned this down to the hour."
A marshal stepped behind Derek, grabbing his wrist and twisting it behind his back. The sharp *click* of the cuffs echoed in the silent room.
"Hannah! Don't do this!" Derek cried, tears finally breaking past his eyes as the cold reality closed in. "I’m your husband! We can fix this! We can get counseling!"
"You're not my husband anymore," I said softly. "You're just the criminal who broke into my daughter's life."
Jenna was already weeping hysterically as an officer handcuffed her to her designer luggage. When they moved to cuff Patricia, the older woman tried to pull away, screaming obscenities about ungrateful military wives until the marshals firmly escorted her through the atrium in full view of hundreds of stunned vacationers.
Passengers pulled out their phones, filming the wealthy family in their resort wear being marched down the gangway in chains.
Derek kept his head down, sobbing quietly, completely broken.

I didn't feel triumph. I only felt an overwhelming urgency to get back on that plane and hold my daughter.
