Chapter 9 - A Clean Slate

The morning sun streamed through the bay windows of our new home in Virginia Beach.

It was a charming, sun-drenched colonial house situated just five minutes from the ocean, nestled inside a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood filled with military families and playing children.

There were no padlocked closets here. Every door was wide open, welcoming the sea breeze.

I stood on the back porch with a warm mug of coffee in my hand. Down in the lush green grass, Lily was squealing with laughter as a four-month-old golden retriever puppy tumbled over her sneakers, licking her cheeks until she collapsed into giggles.

"Barnaby, stop! That tickles!" she cheered.

My commander had approved my transfer request. I was no longer on an active overseas deployment cycle; I had accepted a permanent position as an intelligence instructor at the joint training center in Norfolk. I would never have to leave Lily behind again. Every morning I would make her pancakes, walk her to kindergarten, and every night I would tuck her into bed with a bedtime story.

Captain Ramirez and Detective Marcus Bell walked through the side gate, carrying a large cardboard box filled with housewarming gifts.

"Looks like the welcoming committee has arrived," Bell smiled, kneeling down to let Barnaby sniff his knuckles. "How is she settling in?"

"She hasn't had a single nightmare in two weeks," I said, my heart full. "She feels safe."

"She *is* safe, Hannah," Ramirez said, handing me a folder containing the final decree of absolute divorce and the updated sole-custody court order bearing the state seal. "The last of the restitution checks cleared yesterday. The inheritance trust Derek tried to hide was liquidated. Lily’s college fund is fully restored and protected in an independent trust fund."

I held the papers in my hand. For months, paperwork had been a weapon used to threaten my life and my daughter’s safety. Now, the paper represented absolute freedom.
