Chapter 2 - The Hospital Vigil

The sterile hum of the pediatric intensive care unit was a stark contrast to the chaos of the house. Lily looked impossibly small in the center of the oversized hospital bed, an IV line taped securely to the back of her tiny hand.

I sat in the vinyl chair beside her, holding her limp, warm fingers against my cheek. She had fallen asleep after the nurses gave her pediatric electrolyte fluids and a small portion of warm broth. Her fever had finally broken, but the dark circles beneath her hazel eyes spoke volumes about the terror she had endured.

"Major Nolan?"

A tall woman in a sharp navy blazer stood in the doorway, holding a leather notepad. Behind her was Captain Dave Ramirez, a military lawyer from my base's legal assistance office.

"I’m Special Agent Sarah Vance with Army CID," the woman said softly, stepping inside. "Captain Ramirez briefed me. We’re coordinating with the Chesapeake Police Department and Child Protective Services."

I gently placed Lily’s hand on the mattress, tucked the blanket under her chin, and stepped out into the quiet corridor.

"Tell me what we’re looking at," I said, crossing my arms to hide the tremor of rage coursing through my limbs.

Agent Vance opened her tablet. "Your husband didn't just take a vacation. Bank records obtained in the last two hours show Derek drained your joint accounts, but it goes deeper. Three days before you arrived, a wire transfer of forty thousand dollars was routed from an equity loan taken against your house."

"An equity loan?" My stomach dropped. "I never signed an equity loan."

"He forged your digital signature using a scanned copy of your military power of attorney," Captain Ramirez interjected. "He used your overseas deployment status to bypass in-person verification. Derek, his mother Patricia, and his sister Jenna boarded the *Carnival Horizon* out of Miami on Tuesday morning. They booked two penthouse suites."

"And Evelyn Price?" I asked. "Our neighbor who said Derek told her a babysitter was upstairs?"

Agent Vance’s mouth thinned. "We pulled the neighborhood smart-doorbell footage. On Monday evening, Patricia Nolan was seen walking out of your house carrying Lily’s tablet and the interior security hub. Derek followed behind her with luggage. When Mrs. Price approached to ask if they needed help, Patricia told her directly that a certified night nanny was arriving by rideshare within the hour."

They had orchestrated a cover-up before they even left the driveway. They didn't forget Lily. They deliberately walked away, convinced that leaving a four-year-old with a few bowls of dry food would suffice until they returned to execute their custody petition.

"Where is the ship now?" I asked.

"It completed its round in Nassau," Agent Vance said. "Due to rough seas from an approaching low-pressure system, the vessel skipped its private island stop and is heading toward its first U.S. port of entry: Key West, Florida. Estimated arrival is tomorrow morning at 0800 hours."

"Are they going to arrest them when they step off?"

"That depends," Vance said quietly. "Felony child neglect warrants are already signed by the Commonwealth magistrate. But to intercept them at maritime customs for federal fraud, we need to prove intentional flight and asset concealment before the gangway lowers."

I looked through the glass window at Lily. She stirred slightly, clutching a stuffed bear the paramedic had given her, murmuring my name in her sleep.

"Give me thirty minutes with Derek's laptop from the closet," I told them. "He thinks he's clever because he worked in corporate logistics. But he left every single paper trail wide open."
