Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail(Length: ~1800 words)

The ride back from the airport in Nolan’s chauffeured black Maybach was dead silent.
Outside, the city lights flickered against the tinted windows like liquid gold, but inside, my mind was spinning out of control. I sat huddled in the plush leather backseat, my hands trembling as I stared down at my phone.
A text message from Derek had just popped up on my screen: “Hey babe! Just landed in rainy Seattle. The seminar starts early tomorrow. Miss you so much! Love you!”
Ten seconds later, a text from Clara arrived: “Hi Emily, made it to Mom’s hospital in Chicago. She’s stable, thank God. So sorry I’m missing wedding prep this weekend! Love you, sister!”
A bitter, hysterical laugh bubbled up in my throat. I squeezed my eyes shut, feeling fresh tears sting my cheeks.
"Delete nothing," Nolan said from the seat beside me. He had his laptop open, his long fingers flying across the keyboard with clinical precision. "Save every text, every voicemail, every email. They are building their own execution gallows."
"Nolan," I whispered, turning to face him. "How did this happen? Derek loved me. We were buying a house together..."
"Derek didn't love you, Emily," Nolan said plainly, not looking away from his screen. "He loved your proximity to wealth. And Clara didn't want to be your friend; she wanted to be you."
Nolan turned his laptop screen toward me.
On the screen was a detailed financial matrix displaying corporate accounts, property titles, and offshore transactions.
"While I was overseas managing the syndicate in London for the past six months," Nolan explained, pointing at a red highlighted column, "I had my forensic accountants audit the holding accounts for Vance & Associates—the architectural design firm you and Derek founded three years ago."
My breath hitched. "What did they find?"
"You hold sixty percent of the equity because your trust fund backed the company’s initial three-million-dollar credit line," Nolan revealed. "Derek holds forty percent as Chief Executive. Over the last eight months, Derek has quietly transferred over eight hundred thousand dollars from the corporate operating account into a secondary shell company registered under Clara’s name: C&D Holdings."
I stared at the numbers in sheer, unadulterated shock.
"He... he stole from the firm?!" I stammered.
"He embezzled from the firm," Nolan corrected firmly. "He used your money—and my investment collateral—to buy Clara an oceanfront condo in South Beach, pay off her credit card debts, and purchase those first-class tickets to Cabo San Lucas."
My blood ran ice-cold.
Derek hadn't just cheated on me; he had systematically liquidated my financial life while pretending to be a loving fiancé preparing for a fairytale wedding. He had let me spend months stressing over floral arrangements, catering menus, and seating charts, all while planning to run away with my best friend using my own family's wealth.
"Why didn't you tell me this earlier?" I asked, my voice shaking with rage.
"I received the final forensic report two days ago while I was still in transit from London," Nolan replied, closing his laptop with a sharp snap. "I was going to present it to you tomorrow morning over breakfast. But seeing them at the airport changed our timeline."
Nolan reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a sleek black folder, handing it to me.
"What's this?" I asked, opening the heavy leather binding.
"That is a complete, legally binding asset revocation order," Nolan said, his tone dropping into a dark, triumphant register. "Because Derek’s executive contract contains a strict moral turpitude clause tied to corporate fraud, I can trigger an emergency board vote as the primary debt holder."
I looked at my brother. "When?"
"Derek and Clara’s flight to Cabo lands at 11:00 PM local time," Nolan smirked coldly. "They will check into the five-star Presidential Suite at the Waldorf Astoria—a suite booked on your corporate American Express card."
Nolan pulled out his phone, tapping his screen twice.
"At midnight," Nolan announced, "when they order their first bottle of Dom Pérignon, I will personally press the button that freezes every credit card, locks every bank account, repossesses Derek's sports car, and revokes Clara's corporate apartment lease."
I looked out the window at the dark highway, my heart hardening from a place of broken grief into something fierce, lethal, and powerful.
"No, Nolan," I said softly, looking my brother in the eye.
Nolan raised an eyebrow. "No?"
"Don't press the button at midnight," I said, a cold, sharp smile touching my lips for the first time. "Wait until two o'clock in the morning. Let them get completely comfortable first."

Nolan looked at me for three seconds before letting out a rare, deep laugh of approval.
"My little sister," Nolan smiled, squeezing my hand gently. "Welcome to the game."
