Chapter 5 - The Unraveling of Clara(Length: ~1800 words)

At 2:00 PM that afternoon, Clara Reed sat in the sunlit living room of her luxury South Beach-style condo in downtown San Francisco, frantically packing her clothes into leather suitcases.

Her phone was ringing continuously on the glass coffee table—dozens of missed calls from her mother, her friends, and Derek's defense attorney.

News of Derek’s dramatic arrest in the Vance & Associates boardroom had spread through our social circle like wildfire.

Suddenly, the front door of her condo clicked open.

Clara gasped, spinning around, clutching a silk dress to her chest.

I walked into the entryway wearing my emerald suit, flanked by Nolan and two uniformed county sheriff’s deputies holding a stack of legal repossession documents.

Clara dropped the dress onto the floor, her eyes wide with frantic, terrified shock. "Emily...!"

"Hello, Clara," I said calmly, stepping onto the polished hardwood floor of the living room—a condo that had been decorated using my stolen corporate funds.

"Emily, listen to me!" Clara wept, taking a step toward me, forcing fake tears to stream down her cheeks. "It was all Derek! He manipulated me! He told me you didn't love him anymore! He threatened to ruin my career if I didn't go to Cabo with him!"

I stood motionless, watching her performance with quiet disgust.

"He told you he threatened your career, Clara?" I asked smoothly. "Is that why you texted him three days ago asking if my trust fund money had cleared into your private account yet?"

Clara froze, her mouth staying open, her tears drying up instantly. "How... how did you—"

"We subpoenaed your private phone records this morning, Miss Reed," Nolan stepped forward, handing a blue folder to the lead deputy. "Alongside the bank transfers showing you personally authorized four cash withdrawals from the C&D Holdings shell account."

The lead deputy pulled out a formal eviction and asset seizure notice.

"Miss Clara Reed," the deputy announced sternly. "This residential property is owned under an LLC controlled by Miss Emily Vance. Pursuant to an emergency court freeze, this property is being repossessed effective immediately. You have fifteen minutes to gather your personal clothing and vacate the premises."

"Eviction?!" Clara shrieked, looking around her lavishly decorated apartment. "You can't kick me out! Everything I own is in this place!"

"Everything in this place was bought with my stolen money, Clara," I said, stepping right up to her face. "The furniture, the art, the clothes... even that cream coat you wore at the airport."

Clara stared at me with pure, poisonous hatred, her fake victim mask completely slipping off to reveal her true, envious face.

"You think you're so perfect, don't you, Emily?!" Clara spat, her voice trembling with bitter rage. "You had everything! The rich family, the big company, the handsome fiancé! You didn't even care about Derek! You just treated him like an accessory!"

"I treated him with love and respect for seven years, Clara," I replied coldly. "And I treated you like a sister for nineteen."

"You looked down on me!" Clara screamed. "Every time you bought me a dress or invited me on your family vacations, you were just showing off!"

"I was loving a friend who was secretly plotting to destroy me," I corrected gently. "And now, Clara, you have fifteen minutes to take your clothes and leave."

The deputy stepped forward. "Fifteen minutes starts now, ma'am."

Clara sobbed hysterically as she shoved random clothes into a single fabric bag, under the watchful eyes of the two deputies.

As she dragged her bag toward the front door, she stopped beside me, looking at me with eyes filled with utter, defeated ruin.

"Where am I supposed to go, Emily?" Clara whimpered, her voice cracking into a pathetic plea. "My mom isn't sick... I don't have any money... my credit cards are ruined..."

I looked at the woman who had been my best friend since childhood, feeling a final, tragic wave of pity, but zero desire for mercy.

"You can go to Chicago, Clara," I said softly. "I hear your mother lives there."

I turned my back on her as the deputies guided her out the front door, closing the lock behind her forever.
