Chapter 6 - The Public Reframe(Length: ~1800 words)

Three days later.
The news of the scandal had reached a fever pitch across San Francisco high-society circles.
With the wedding date just nine days away, over three hundred invited guests—wealthy donors, corporate leaders, and socialites—were buzzing with rumors about why the grand wedding at the St. Regis Hotel had been abruptly canceled.
Derek’s mother, Victoria Vance—a notorious social climber who had spent months bragging about her son marrying into the billionaire Vance family—attempted to launch a desperate public relations smear campaign.
She leaked false stories to local gossip blogs, claiming that I had suffered a "mental breakdown," canceled the wedding out of jealousy, and framed Derek using my family's legal influence.
At 2:00 PM on Thursday, Victoria held an informal "press conference" outside the County Courthouse, crying dramatically into a silk handkerchief for the camera crews.
"My son Derek is an innocent, brilliant young man who gave seven years of his life to Emily Vance!" Victoria sobbed to the reporters. "Her family used their power to frame him because he wanted to delay the wedding! They are destroying a good man’s life!"
I sat in Nolan’s private office in downtown San Francisco, watching the live broadcast on his wall-mounted television screen.
Nolan leaned against his oak desk, taking a sip of scotch. "She's persistent. Painfully dumb, but persistent."
"She thinks she can bully us into dropping the criminal charges against Derek," I said, my voice calm and collected.
"Are we going to issue a formal corporate press release?" Nolan asked.
"No," I smiled, standing up from my leather armchair, smoothing down my tailored blazer. "We aren't issuing a press release. We are hosting a press conference of our own—at the exact venue where the wedding was supposed to take place."
The following morning at 10:00 AM, the grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel was packed to capacity with reporters, news crews, and invited society guests.
I walked out onto the elevated stage wearing an exquisite white tailored trousersuit, holding no paper notes, flanked by Nolan and Assistant District Attorney Karen Walsh.
The camera flashes flared continuously across the room.
I stood tall behind the podium, looking straight into the primary news camera lens with total composure.
"Good morning, everyone," I spoke into the microphone, my voice clear, resonant, and completely commanding the room. "Over the past forty-eight hours, statements have been made regarding my family, my company, and the cancellation of my upcoming wedding."
The room fell into an absolute, attentive hush.
"I will not engage in social media rumors," I continued smoothly. "Instead, I operate solely on verifiable facts."
I tapped the control pad on the podium.
The massive projector screen behind me clicked on.
"What you see on this screen," I announced, pointing to a verified digital timeline, "is the complete, unedited airport terminal security footage from Terminal 3, alongside certified bank records showing eight hundred thousand dollars embezzled by Gregory Derek Vance and Clara Reed."
The reporters gasped loudly as high-definition images of Derek and Clara kissing near the departure gates played on the thirty-foot screen, followed by banking spreadsheets detailing their theft.
Reporters typed frantically on their laptops as camera lenses zoomed in on the undeniable evidence.
"Furthermore," Assistant District Attorney Walsh stepped up to the microphone, "the State Attorney General has officially filed eight felony counts against Derek Vance for grand embezzlement, wire fraud, and grand larceny. He is currently being held without bail at the County Jail."
I stepped back to the podium, looking out over the stunned audience.
"The wedding scheduled for next week is officially canceled," I declared, my voice ringing with unshakeable power. "However, the grand reception at the St. Regis will still take place. It will no longer be a wedding. It will be a charity gala supporting survivors of financial domestic abuse, with a two-million-dollar donation from my family's foundation."
The entire ballroom erupted into a spontaneous, thunderous standing ovation.

Reporters cheered, camera flashes strobed, and society leaders clapped with deep respect.
Victoria Vance, who was watching the live broadcast from her apartment living room, dropped her tea cup onto the rug, realizing that her son’s reputation—and her social standing—was buried forever.
