Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Massacre(Length: ~1800 words)

By 9:00 AM the following morning, I sat at the head of the long glass conference table on the top floor of the Vance & Associates corporate tower in downtown San Francisco.

I wore a sharp, custom-tailored emerald green trousersuit, my dark hair pulled back into a sleek, flawless chignon. My eyes were entirely dry, devoid of tears, filled only with calm, unyielding authority.

Sitting on my right was Nolan, looking immaculate in a dark navy suit, calmly sipping black espresso while reviewing a stack of legal filings.

Sitting around the rest of the table were the four senior equity partners and board members of our architectural firm—seasoned executives who had known my family for a decade.

The double glass doors of the conference room slammed open.

Derek burst into the room, looking utterly undone. He wore a wrinkled polo shirt, his hair was disheveled, deep dark circles hung under his bloodshot eyes, and he reeked of sweat and cheap airport coffee. He had spent his entire savings on two emergency standby economy tickets back to San Francisco after sitting on the curb in Cabo for six hours.

"Emily!" Derek roared, marching toward the head of the table, his face contorted in frantic rage. "Have you lost your damn mind?! You froze my cards! You kicked us out of the hotel! You had security drag us into the street in Mexico!"

The four board members looked at Derek with absolute, stone-cold disgust.

"Sit down, Derek," Nolan said softly, his voice barely above a whisper, yet it halted Derek in his tracks like a physical wall.

"I will not sit down!" Derek yelled, pointing a trembling finger at me. "Emily, this is insane! If you were mad about Clara coming to Mexico, we could have talked about it! She was stressed about her mother, and I offered to accompany her! It was a friendly gesture! You ruined our vacation over a stupid misunderstanding!"

I slowly set my pen down on my leather notepad, looking up at him with a quiet, serene smile that made Derek's breath hitch in his throat.

"A friendly gesture, Derek?" I asked, my voice smooth as silk. "Is that what you call kissing my maid of honor for three minutes near the departure gates of Terminal 3?"

Derek froze. His jaw dropped slightly, the color completely draining from his face. "You... you were at the airport?"

"I went to pick up my brother, Derek," I said softly. "I stood forty feet away while you held her jaw and kissed her like you were in a movie."

Derek stammered, his arrogant posture collapsing into pure, pathetic desperation. "Emily... babe... listen to me! It's not what it looked like! I was... I was comforting her! She was crying because of her mom!"

"Comforting her?" Nolan interjected smoothly, opening his leather binder. "Is that also why you transferred eight hundred thousand dollars of company escrow funds into C&D Holdings—a firm registered exclusively to Clara Reed?"

Loud gasps erupted across the boardroom table!

Board member Arthur Pendelton, a silver-haired veteran architect, slammed his hand onto the table. "You stole eight hundred thousand dollars from the corporate reserves, Vance?!"

"No! That's a lie!" Derek screamed, stepping back toward the glass door. "That was a secondary investment allocation! I am the CEO of this company!"

"Correction, Derek," I said, leaning forward, resting my hands on the glass table. "You were the CEO."

I tapped the control tablet on the table.

The massive high-definition wall screen clicked on, displaying a certified forensic audit report bearing the gold seal of the State Attorney General’s Financial Crimes Unit.

"Under Section 4B of the Founder's Charter," I declared, my voice echoing clearly through the silent room, "any executive officer indicted for corporate embezzlement or moral turpitude forfeits all voting equity and is subject to immediate termination without severance."

"I hold forty percent of this company!" Derek bellowed.

"Your forty percent was pledged as secondary collateral against the three-million-dollar credit line backed by my family's trust," Nolan stated calmly. "Because you defaulted on the corporate loan covenants through unauthorized embezzlement, your equity has been formally seized and transferred to Emily."

Derek stared at the screen, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

In less than twelve hours, he had gone from a wealthy CEO preparing to marry into a billionaire family to a completely broke, disgraced fraudster facing imminent federal indictment.

"Furthermore, Derek," I added, pulling a white envelope from my blazer pocket, "the San Francisco Police Department’s Commercial Fraud Division has just been handed our full audit file."

Right on cue, the double glass doors swung open once again.

Two uniformed police officers and a lead detective stepped into the boardroom.

"Gregory Derek Vance?" Detective Miller asked, stepping up behind Derek.

Derek turned around, his eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated horror. "Yes...?"

"You are under arrest for grand felony embezzlement, corporate wire fraud, and grand larceny," Detective Miller barked, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Turn around and place your hands behind your back."

"Emily! No! Please!" Derek sobbed hysterically as the steel cuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. "Talk to them! Tell them it's a mistake! We're getting married in twelve days! I love you!"

I stood up from the head of the table, looking down at him with cold, tranquil indifference.

"The wedding is canceled, Derek," I said softly. "And your new home is a six-by-eight cell."

The officers dragged Derek out of the boardroom, his desperate, weeping pleas echoing down the carpeted hallway until the heavy glass doors clicked shut.

I took a deep, full breath of fresh air, feeling a profound, liberating weight lifted off my shoulders.

May you like

Nolan stood up beside me, placing a warm hand on my shoulder, smiling gently.

"Phase one complete, little sister," Nolan whispered. "Now... let's go visit Clara."
