Chapter 3 - The Forensic Ledger

Forty-five minutes later, the living room was crawling with crime scene technicians. Camera flashes illuminated the scattered locks of my hair, marking them with small yellow numbered cones. A female paramedic named Rachel sat beside me on the sofa, gently applying cold antiseptic gel to the bleeding scrapes on my wrists where Eleanor had clawed through my skin.

"Your blood pressure is remarkably stable considering the trauma, sweetie," Rachel murmured, gently shining a penlight into my pupils. "Most women in your shoes would be hyperventilating."

"I did my crying three weeks ago," I answered plainly. "Tonight is for documentation."

At the doorway, Detective Marcus Vance from the Domestic Violence and Major Crimes Unit was concluding a phone call. He walked over, notebook in hand, surveying the sheared hair on the floor with a scowl of pure disgust.

"Mrs. Hayes—or do you prefer Clara?" Detective Vance asked, pulling over an armchair.

"Clara Miller," I said firmly. "I kept my maiden name on all my legal assets, including the deed to this condo."

Vance nodded with a faint flicker of approval. "Well, Clara, your attorney, Ms. Delgado, just transferred the raw cloud footage over to our server. Our tech unit has already reviewed the first twelve minutes. What your husband and mother-in-law did constitutes felony aggravated assault, unlawful restraint, and given their demands for your financial liquidation, we are looking at felony extortion and conspiracy charges."

"Good," I said. "And the weapon?"

"Kitchen shears qualify as a dangerous instrument under Colorado revised statutes," Vance explained. "Cutting off a spouse's hair against their will, especially by physical restraint, is legally categorized as a targeted act of degradation and bodily injury. He won't be getting a low-level misdemeanor citation. He and his mother are spending the night in Denver County Jail."

"What about Briana?" I asked, glancing toward the entryway where Trevor’s younger sister still sat under the watchful eye of an officer, shivering despite the heated room.

"She was present during the commission of a violent felony," Vance replied grimly. "Unless she cooperates fully and provides state testimony regarding the conspiracy, she’s facing accomplice charges."

Just then, my attorney, Elena Delgado, burst through the front door. Sharp, immaculate in her navy trench coat, and clutching a thick leather briefcase, Elena bypassed the caution tape with practiced authority. She took one look at my hacked hair, her jaw tightening with furious resolve, before dropping down to hug me briefly.

"They're going away for a very long time, Clara," Elena whispered. She pulled a folder from her briefcase and handed it to Vance. "Detective, while you process the physical assault, here is the financial file my forensic investigator compiled over the last forty-eight hours."

Vance opened the tabbed folder. His eyebrows rose as he scanned the first page. "Thirty-five thousand dollars isn't the half of it, is it?"

"Not even close," Elena answered coldly. "The thirty-five thousand dollar 'debt' they claimed Briana owed was actually Trevor's personal margin-trading losses on illicit cryptocurrency platforms. He forged Briana's signature on two private loans to cover his tracks, and when the collectors threatened him, he brought his mother into the scheme to terrorize Clara into liquidating her premarital trust."

From across the room, Briana gasped, her head jerking up. "What?! Trevor told me the debt came from my college tuition deferral!"

I looked at Briana with a mixture of pity and absolute contempt. "Your brother didn't sacrifice anything for you, Briana. He used you as a shield. And Eleanor knew every single detail."
