Chapter 8 - Financial Scorched Earth

By noon that same day, Elena and I were seated in the executive conference room of my late father’s estate management firm. Across the mahogany table sat Mr. Bradley Vance, my family’s trust director, along with two forensic auditors.
"Clara, now that Trevor is formally detained and charged with violent felonies, the forfeiture clause in your prenuptial agreement is fully triggered," Bradley explained, sliding a leather-bound binder toward me.
"Explain the clause for the record, Bradley," Elena requested.
Bradley tapped the legal document with his gold pen. "Section 14, Subsection B: In the event that either spouse engages in acts of domestic violence, physical assault, or attempted fraud against the other spouse's premarital assets, the guilty party immediately forfeits any and all claims to marital community property, spousal support, and rights of tenancy."
A cold, satisfying weight settled into my chest. "What does that mean for his personal possessions and his family’s assets?"
"It means everything he thought he owned belongs to you or the creditors," Bradley replied with a thin smile. "First: the luxury Audi he was driving was leased under your corporate trust. We have already instructed the repossession agency to seize the vehicle from the courthouse parking lot."
"Second," Bradley continued, "the suburban home in Cherry Creek where Eleanor lives—the home she claimed was entirely hers—was actually co-signed by Trevor using your forged guarantee two years ago. Because the guarantee is fraudulent and Trevor has defaulted on the balloon mortgage payment of fourteen thousand dollars due yesterday, the lending institution has initiated immediate foreclosure proceedings."
I leaned back in the leather chair, letting the reality sink in. Eleanor had spent months bragging to her high-society book clubs about her magnificent historical home, treating me like a peasant who had merely married into her son's supposed greatness. In truth, she was living in a house of cards built on forged signatures and unpaid debt.
"Can Eleanor stop the foreclosure?" I asked.
"Not unless she can produce two hundred and eighty thousand dollars in back payments and penalties within twenty-one days," Elena chimed in. "And seeing as her bail is seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars cash, she doesn't even have enough money to buy herself a commissary toothbrush, let alone save the house."
"What about Trevor’s personal bank accounts?" I inquired.
"Wiped clean," Bradley said. "The private lenders he borrowed from to fund his crypto gambling realized he was arrested today. They immediately filed emergency liens against his remaining business assets. Trevor doesn't just have zero dollars, Clara. He is currently four hundred and ten thousand dollars in the red."

I picked up the pen and signed my name cleanly at the bottom of the dissolution and eviction decrees.
"Execute every single clause, Bradley," I instructed calmly. "Empty the accounts, repossess the car, and notify Eleanor’s landlord that the master lease is terminated effective immediately."
