Chapter 9 - The New Silhouette

That afternoon, I walked into an upscale salon in downtown Denver where Elena’s trusted stylist, Marcus, had cleared his entire schedule for me.
The salon was quiet, smelling of lavender and expensive oils. Marcus greeted me with a warm, respectful nod. He didn't ask awkward questions; he simply guided me to the plush leather styling chair and gently removed the silk scarf that had been covering my uneven hair.
He surveyed the damage in the mirror with a quiet, professional assessment. "The cut on the right temple is short, about two inches above the ear. But the bone structure of your jaw and cheekbones is incredible, Clara. We don't need to mourn what was taken. We can create something magnificent."
"Cut it, Marcus," I said, meeting my own reflection with clear, unwavering eyes. "Make it sharp. Make it bold. I don't want a single strand that Trevor ever touched left on my head."
For the next hour, the only sound was the rhythmic snip-snip of Marcus's shears.
He sculpted the sides into an immaculate, tapered fade, keeping the top slightly longer and textured, sweeping forward in a sleek, effortlessly chic modern pixie cut. It was fierce, elegant, and brought out the fierce hazel of my eyes and the defined line of my jawline.
When he finally swept the cape away and brushed off the stray hairs, I stared at the woman in the mirror.
She didn't look like a battered victim. She didn't look like the quiet, accommodating girl who had tolerated Eleanor's snide remarks over Sunday dinners or Trevor's passive-aggressive financial demands.
She looked untouchable.
"You look like a CEO who just bought out her competitors," Elena remarked, walking over with two iced coffees and an approving grin.
"I feel like myself for the first time in three years," I whispered, running my fingers through the fresh, clean texture.
My phone chimed with an alert on the marble counter. It was a push notification from the Denver Post local news app:
*BREAKING: Magistrate’s Son and Mother Denied Bail Reduction in Shocking Domestic Assault Case; High-Rise Condo Standoff Captured on Hidden Camera.*
Attached to the article was a still image from the cloud footage: Trevor kneeling over me with the shears, Eleanor snarling as she pinned my wrists, and my face, cold and unyielding, staring right past them.

The comment section was already flooded with tens of thousands of messages. The public was outraged. Eleanor's social circle had already issued a public statement condemning her actions, and Trevor's former employer had officially terminated his contract for gross moral turpitude.
They had tried to publicly humiliate me. Instead, they had paraded their own monstrous cruelty before the entire world.
