Chapter 7 - The Arraignment Ambush

At ten o'clock sharp, Courtroom 4B of the Denver County Courthouse was packed with reporters and curious onlookers. High-profile domestic violence cases involving prominent families always drew attention, but the leaked details of the assault had turned the hearing into a media firestorm.
Trevor and Eleanor were led into the courtroom through the prisoner holding door, clad in bright orange jumpsuits with chains clinking heavily around their waists and ankles.
Eleanor held her chin high, trying desperately to project an air of aristocratic dignity, but her greasy hair, unwashed face, and oversized prison scrubs made her look utterly pathetic. Trevor kept his head bowed, his shoulders slumped in defeat.
Judge Harrison, a veteran jurist with a reputation for mercilessly punishing domestic abusers, looked down from the bench with piercing gray eyes.
"We are here for the arraignment and bail determination in State v. Trevor Hayes and Eleanor Hayes," Judge Harrison announced. "Mr. Pendelton, I see you have entered an appearance on behalf of the defense."
Arthur Pendelton, an aging real estate attorney who looked completely out of his depth, stepped up to the podium, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Yes, Your Honor. My clients are pillars of the community with zero criminal history. This unfortunate incident was an escalated domestic misunderstanding. We request immediate release on personal recognizance, or at most, a modest bond of five thousand dollars each."
Deputy District Attorney Sarah Jenkins stood up immediately. "The State vehemently opposes any release on recognizance, Your Honor. We are requesting that bail be set at one million dollars for Trevor Hayes, and five hundred thousand dollars for Eleanor Hayes, along with immediate permanent protective orders."
Pendelton scoffed loudly. "One million dollars?! That is preposterous! Nobody was severely injured! It was a marital squabble!"
"Misunderstanding, Counsel?" Judge Harrison leaned forward, his voice dripping with venom. "I have just reviewed the high-definition video footage submitted by the Denver Police Department. I watched your client, Trevor Hayes, violently tackle Mrs. Miller to the floor. I watched Eleanor Hayes physically restrain the victim's arms while holding her down, and I watched Mr. Hayes use an eight-inch blade to forcibly cut off the victim's hair while verbally terrorizing her."
The courtroom gallery erupted into murmurs of disgust. Several reporters were typing furiously on their phones.
Judge Harrison silenced the room with a sharp crack of his gavel. "Furthermore, the State has just received a sworn affidavit from the defendants' co-conspirator, Briana Hayes, confirming premeditated financial extortion, stalking, and identity theft."
Eleanor let out a sharp, choked shriek. "Briana?! That ungrateful little brat!"
"Quiet in my courtroom!" Judge Harrison roared, pointing his gavel directly at Eleanor. "One more outburst from you, Mrs. Hayes, and I will hold you in contempt of court on the spot!"
Eleanor shrank back, trembling with suppressed rage.
"Given the calculated cruelty, the physical violence, and the overwhelming evidence of flight risk and witness intimidation," Judge Harrison continued coldly, "bail for Trevor Hayes is set at two million dollars, cash-only. Bail for Eleanor Hayes is set at seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars, cash-only. Both defendants are remanded into custody. Case adjourned."
As the bailiffs seized Trevor's arms to drag him back to the cells, he looked across the courtroom and locked eyes with me.

I was sitting in the front row of the gallery, dressed in a sharp charcoal-gray power suit, with my shorn hair parted neatly to show every ragged cut to the cameras. Beside me, the DA’s victim advocate squeezed my hand.
I raised my chin and looked right through Trevor as if he were nothing more than a stain on the glass.
