Chapter 6 - Briana’s Reckoning

At seven in the morning, Detective Vance called Elena's cell phone. Briana had broken down after four hours in the interrogation room and was begging to speak with me before the arraignment hearing.

Elena and I arrived at the Denver District Attorney’s annex twenty minutes later. We were ushered into a small, windowless conference room where Briana sat, pale and trembling, her eyes swollen red from crying. A public defender sat beside her, tapping nervously on a legal pad.

When Briana saw me—especially the jagged, butchered hair framing my face—she flinched, shrinking back into her metal chair as if struck by physical blows.

"Clara..." she choked out, her hands shaking violently. "I didn't know. I swear to God on my life, I didn't know Trevor was going to touch you! Mom told me we were just going over to your condo to stage an intervention!"

"An intervention?" I asked, pulling out a chair and sitting directly across from her. My voice was calm, yet heavier than lead. "With heavy kitchen shears in Trevor's coat pocket? With Eleanor locking the deadbolt the second I walked in from the grocery store?"

Briana sobbed openly, wiping her nose with a crumpled tissue. "They told me you were hiding money that belonged to our family! Mom said that when your father died, he took advantage of our father’s business collapse! Trevor told me that if I didn't help them pressure you, the debt collectors would take my car and my nursing license!"

"Briana," I said softly, leaning forward. "Your father went bankrupt because he gambled away his pension fifteen years ago. My father had nothing to do with it. And that thirty-five thousand dollar debt? That wasn't yours. Trevor took out a loan under your social security number eight months ago to cover his degenerate crypto debts."

Briana froze. Her tears abruptly stopped, replaced by a look of sheer, uncomprehending horror. "What did you say?"

Elena slid a thick stack of loan applications and forged bank statements across the table. "Here are the credit pull documents, Briana. Trevor used an old copy of your driver's license from when you lived at his apartment in 2022. The signature on the digital promissory note isn't yours—it matches Trevor’s handwriting analysis perfectly."

Briana grabbed the papers, her hands trembling so hard the sheets rustled like dry leaves. She read line after line, her face turning from pale to chalk white.

"He destroyed my credit," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "He used my name to borrow money from a predatory lender... and then he brought me to your house so Mom could help him terrorize you to pay it off?"

"Yes," I answered. "Trevor and Eleanor don't love you, Briana. They view you as a financial tool, exactly the way they viewed me. The only difference is, I recognized the trap in time."

Briana looked up at me, her chest heaving. "What do I do, Clara? Please... my lawyer says I could get three years in prison as an accomplice."

Elena stepped forward, her voice crisp and commanding. "You turn state's evidence. You sign a full sworn affidavit detailing every conversation Trevor and Eleanor had over the last four weeks regarding Clara's money, the threats, the staging of the fake medical emergency last Tuesday, and the plan to hold her down tonight. You testify against both of them in front of the grand jury. If you do that, the DA will offer you complete immunity."

Briana didn't hesitate for a single second. She grabbed the pen from her public defender’s hand. "Give me the paper. I'll write down every word they ever said."
