Chapter 2 - The SetupThe morning sun cast long, cold shadows across the lawn as Jason left for his pre-birthday round of golf at the country club. Before slamming the front door, he poked his head back inside to issue one final reminder: dinner had to be served precisely at seven o’clock, and everything must look immaculate.

The moment his luxury sedan disappeared down the driveway, I set my plan into motion.
I didn’t step foot near the kitchen stove. I didn’t marinate meats, chop vegetables, or tie my apron strings. Instead, I pulled out my phone and dialed the number of Culinary Artistry, Baltimore’s most exclusive high-end catering service. Using Jason’s black-card account credentials—which I had memorized years ago while managing our household bills—I booked their top-tier emergency rush service, requesting a complete, five-course gourmet dinner for twenty people, delivered hot and ready to plate by six-thirty that evening.
Next, I called my younger sister, Maya.
She arrived at the house within forty-tight minutes, her eyes wide with shock when she saw my fiberglass cast and hospital sling. Without wasting a single second, we went straight to work. While Maya carried my suitcases, personal documents, and irreplaceable mementos out to her car trunk, I sat at the master control panel of our smart-home security system.
Jason loved bragging to his golf buddies about our state-of-the-art security setup, specifically the high-definition cameras monitoring every inch of the perimeter and interior hallways. What he had completely forgotten in his drunken arrogance the night before was a crucial technical feature: those cameras recorded crystal-clear audio alongside pristine video.
With a few clicks, I exported the high-resolution footage from the previous night—the exact sequence showing him shoving me onto the frozen porch, locking me outside in sub-zero temperatures, and issuing his callous ultimatum about cooking his birthday dinner while crippled.
I saved the files securely to an encrypted cloud drive and downloaded a backup copy straight to a sleek flash drive.

By six-forty in the evening, the dining room looked breathtaking. The caterers had arrived on schedule, discreetly transferring exquisite dishes into our own fine bone-china cookware so no one would ever suspect the food hadn't been prepared in our kitchen.
I stood near the foyer entrance wearing a structured, high-necked black dress. The heavy white cast on my arm was impossible to miss, cradled carefully inside a sleek black silk sling that gave me the austere look of a Victorian mourning widow presiding over a feast.
