Chapter 4 - The Unraveling"Thank you all for coming tonight," I began, my voice clear, steady, and carrying effortlessly across the silent dining room. "Jason has been looking forward to his fortieth birthday for many months. As you all know, he is a man who cares deeply about his image—about how his peers perceive him, about his status, and about the legacy he is building."

Jason chuckled nervously, his smile faltering just a fraction at the edges. "Honey, you really don't need to make a toast, the wine is getting warm—"
"I do need to," I interrupted smoothly, holding his gaze across the table. "Because tonight, I wanted to give him a gift that truly reflects the man he is behind closed doors. A gift that captures his true character when the cameras are off and the public is no longer watching."
A heavy, uneasy tension settled over the table. Arthur Sterling frowned, putting his fork down.
Jason stood up abruptly, his chair scraping loudly against the hardwood floor. His face drained of color, turning a pasty, sickly gray. "Clara. Sit down right now. This is inappropriate—"
"I’m not sitting down, Jason," I said firmly. "Because tonight’s centerpiece isn’t the chocolate mousse cake."
Before anyone could react, I reached into my pocket, pulled out the sleek black remote control for our integrated home entertainment system, pointed it directly at the massive, eighty-inch smart television mounted on the dining room wall, and pressed the play button.
There were no nostalgic childhood photographs. There was no touching slideshow of our wedding day or romantic vacation memories.
Instead, the screen flickered to life, illuminating the dark dining room with crystal-clear, high-definition night-vision footage.
The time stamp in the corner of the screen read 2:14 AM—less than twenty-four hours earlier.
The built-in microphone captured every single ambient sound at maximum volume. The entire room watched as the front door swung open, and my body stumbled violently backward, hurled onto the frozen concrete of our front porch.
They heard the sickening, dull thud of bone striking stone. They heard my sharp, terrified gasp of pain as my arm cracked.
Then came the visual of Jason standing in the doorway, staring down at me with cold indifference, before slamming the heavy wooden door in my face and turning the deadbolt.
Gasps echoed around the table. Eleanor Miller dropped her linen napkin, her hands flying to her mouth in sheer horror.
Jason lunged toward the head of the table like a cornered animal, his voice cracking in absolute panic. "Turn that off! Turn it off right now! It’s a deepfake! It’s hacked!"
Before he could reach me, I dropped the remote control straight into a heavy crystal pitcher filled with melting ice water, instantly neutralizing any chance of him stopping the feed.
The second clip began to play immediately from the interior hallway camera.
The audio filled the room with brutal clarity.
“I don’t care if your arm is broken. You’re my wife. That means tomorrow, you’ll cook. You’ll clean. You’ll host every guest with a smile.”

The speakers echoed his exact words, bouncing off the mahogany walls and embedding themselves permanently into the minds of every single executive, client, and family member present.
Then, with a final click, the television screen went completely black.
