Chapter 3 - The ArrivalAt exactly seven o’clock, the brass front doorbell chimed.

Jason immediately transformed into his public persona: the charming, attentive, high-achieving corporate executive and doting husband. He swung the door open with a bright, dazzling smile to welcome his CEO, Arthur Sterling.

Over the next fifteen minutes, the rest of the invited elite arrived. Senior regional partners, lucrative commercial clients, and Jason’s beaming parents streamed into the foyer, bringing an artificial warmth of expensive perfumes, tailored suits, and hollow laughter.

Jason hovered protectively by my side, wrapping his arm smoothly around my waist as if we were the picture of marital harmony.

"Look at her," Jason announced loudly to his boss, milking every ounce of sympathy possible from my injury. "She took a terrible, clumsy spill on the ice last night. I begged her to cancel the party, to just rest in bed where she belongs. But you know my wonderful wife. She simply insisted on making this night perfect for me."

The surrounding guests cooed with admiration.

"Such dedication!" Arthur Sterling remarked, nodding approvingly at Jason. "You are a very lucky man, Miller. A devoted wife in this day and age is hard to find."

Jason puffed out his chest, soaking up the praise like a sponge. "I tell her that all the time," he lied smoothly.

I offered a polite, tight-lipped smile, keeping my eyes fixed on the floor. For the first two hours of the evening, I played my assigned role in his elaborate theatrical production.

I circulated through the dining room, pouring expensive vintage wine into crystal glasses using my left hand. I listened patiently while Jason loudly monopolized the conversation, boasting about his projected quarterly earnings, his upcoming promotion to Vice President, and his supposed masterminds behind the firm's recent expansion.

I watched his mother, Eleanor, beam proudly from across the mahogany table, whispering to the woman beside her about what an exceptional provider her son was.

The main course was cleared away. The waiters quietly rolled out the dessert cart, serving delicate slices of triple-chocolate mousse cake garnished with gold leaf.

The ambient chatter of twenty wealthy professionals filled the room, completely unaware that they were sitting on top of a ticking time bomb.

I wiped my mouth with my napkin, set it neatly beside my plate, and gently tapped a silver dessert spoon against the rim of my crystal water glass.

Clink. Clink. Clink.

The high-pitched sound cut through the room instantly. Conversations died down. Twenty pairs of expensive, curious eyes turned to focus on the end of the table.

Jason smiled indulgently, raising his own glass. "Ah, is it time for the speech? Let me guess, my brilliant wife wrote a poem?"

I didn't smile back. I stood up slowly, letting my black dress fall straight against my frame, the stark white cast glowing ominously under the chandelier.
