Chapter 6 - The Trap ClosesThe heavy front door clicked shut, sealing out the cool night air and locking in the suffocating stench of failure.

Only the two of us remained in the expansive dining room.

Jason stood motionless beside the abandoned dessert cart, his chest heaving, his tie crooked, sweat beading across his forehead. The mask of charm and corporate invincibility had been permanently stripped away, leaving only a small, terrified, malicious boy in an expensive suit.

Slowly, agonizingly, he turned his head to look at me.

His panic instantly mutated into a dark, murderous rage. His eyes bulged, and the veins in his neck stood out like thick blue ropes.

"You ruined me," he hissed, his voice dropping into a venomous growl as he took a slow, menacing step toward the head of the table. "You absolute, ungrateful bitch. I gave you a life, I gave you a home, and you destroyed everything in one night."

He closed the distance between us, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white.

"I’ll kill you for this," he snarled, raising a hand. "I swear to God, I’ll end you—"

"You won't," I said calmly, not even flinching.

At that exact second, the front door swung open with a heavy click.

Heavy, purposeful footsteps echoed across the marble foyer, followed by the authoritative jingle of utility belts and heavy boots.

Two uniformed police officers walked briskly into the dining room, their hands resting naturally on the taser holsters at their sides. Right behind them stepped my sister, Maya, looking calm and collected holding a signed emergency protection order and a police report duplicate.

"Jason Miller?" the lead officer asked, his voice ringing with absolute authority as he stepped forward.

Jason froze in his tracks, his raised hand dropping limply to his side as the blood drained entirely from his face.

"We received a formal complaint accompanied by verified audio-visual evidence regarding a severe domestic assault occurring on these premises," the officer continued, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You need to come with us downtown."

Jason’s broad shoulders slumped instantly. Whatever ferocious fight remained in his body evaporated like mist under the morning sun. He offered no physical resistance, uttering no further threats as the officer roughly spun him around and secured the cold steel cuffs tightly around his wrists.

As they escorted him past the dining table where his glittering career had just suffered a terminal execution, I casually adjusted the black silk sling supporting my broken arm and picked my leather handbag up off the side table.

"Happy fortieth birthday, Jason," I whispered softly as he was hauled past me toward the exit.

He didn't answer. He kept his head bowed low, staring at the floor as the flashing red and blue lights of the cruiser painted the foyer walls in a dizzying rhythm.
