Chapter 5 - The Silence of the EliteNobody moved. For several long, agonizing seconds, the dining room was wrapped in a tomb-like silence so absolute you could hear the faint hum of the refrigerator down the hall.

Jason stood frozen at the end of the table, his arms trembling, staring wildly around the room as if hoping to find a friendly face. But every single pair of eyes previously fixed on him in admiration now burned with cold, unmitigated contempt.
Arthur Sterling, the powerful CEO who held the keys to Jason’s entire corporate future, slowly pushed his chair back and stood up. His face was carved from granite.
Jason swallowed hard, his voice desperate and pathetic. "Arthur... please. Listen to me. It’s... it’s completely taken out of context! She was throwing a tantrum, she’s unstable, it was just dark humor, a joke—!"
"A joke?" Arthur repeated, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register.
The CEO looked at Jason with open, undisguised revulsion.
"I have two daughters, Miller," Arthur said slowly, his words cutting through the air like a razor blade. "If a man ever laid a hand on one of them, let alone locked them outside with a broken bone... he wouldn't be standing here breathing."
Arthur turned sharply to look at his wife. "Get your coat. We’re leaving."
That single command broke the dam.
Chairs scraped violently across the hardwood floor as senior partners, regional directors, and high-net-worth clients rose in unison. Not a single person offered Jason a parting word. They walked briskly past him as if he carried a contagious plague, refusing to even make eye contact.
"Mom. Dad. Please, you know me!" Jason pleaded, turning frantically toward his parents.
Eleanor Miller sat frozen in her seat, hot tears streaming down her powdered cheeks, staring at her son as if she were looking at a stranger. His father, a retired military man, stood up in rigid, statuesque silence. The older man’s face was dark with profound shame.
Without uttering a single syllable, Jason’s father took his weeping wife gently by the arm, lifted her coat from the back of the chair, and escorted her out of the house without ever looking back once at his only son.

Within five frantic minutes, the forty-thousand-dollar illusion had completely evaporated.
The luxury cars revved their engines in the driveway one by one and sped away into the night, leaving behind half-eaten dessert, flickering candles, and the shattered wreckage of an empire built entirely on lies.
