Chapter 1 - The Hospital Wall(Length: ~800 words)

The cold hospital room smelled heavily of iodine and sterile cotton, but all I could smell was the faint scent of metal and rust—the smell of the hammer.

My right foot was wrapped in thick layers of white gauze, resting elevated on two pillows. Underneath the bandage, my flesh burned with a deep, sickening throb. Every small movement sent sharp lightning bolts of pain shooting straight up my leg, making my breath hitch in my chest.

Beside the bed, my sister Chloe sat stiffly in a plastic chair. Her face was deadly pale, her knuckles white as she gripped her smartphone.

"The nurses alerted hospital security," Chloe whispered, her voice shaking with rage. "And I just forwarded the video file and the chat screenshots directly to Detective Miller at the precinct."

I placed both hands over my five-month pregnant belly. My baby kicked softly against my palm—a tiny, fragile movement that made tears spill over my eyelashes.

"He's really coming here, isn't he?" I asked, my voice barely audible over the hum of the heart monitor.

"Let him come," Chloe said, her tone suddenly hardening like iron. "He thinks he's still in control. He thinks because he deleted the video from the group chat ten minutes ago, he's safe. He has no idea that I saved the unedited high-definition file onto three separate cloud drives before he hit delete."

Outside in the hallway, heavy, rapid footsteps echoed against the linoleum floor.

My heart hammered wildly against my ribs. My breath caught in my throat. For a horrifying second, my mind flashed back to our basement two hours ago: the cold iron doorframe behind my back, the coarse rope digging into my wrists, my husband Julian raising the steel hammer high, and his mother, Beatrice, standing over me with a cold, sadistic grin.

“Harder,” Beatrice had instructed him smoothly, tapping her golden cane on the floor. “She still hasn’t learned her place.”

The memory made me shudder violently. But then I looked down at my hand resting on my stomach, and something fundamental inside me shifted. The fear that had kept me obedient for two years didn't vanish—it turned into pure, ice-cold resolve.

The frosted glass door to my room swung open.

It wasn't Julian.

It was two large, uniformed hospital security guards, followed by a sharp-looking female detective wearing a trench coat and carrying a thick leather notepad.

"Mrs. Maya Vance?" the detective asked, stepping into the room. "I'm Detective Sarah Torres with the Special Victims Unit. Your sister sent us the digital evidence."

"Is my husband downstairs?" I managed to ask, my voice trembling but firm.

"He was," Detective Torres replied smoothly, a dark, dangerous calm in her eyes. "Julian Vance and his mother, Beatrice Vance, just attempted to force their way past the ER security desk demanding to see you and retrieve your phone."

Chloe sat up straight. "Did you arrest them?"

"Julian Vance was taken into custody in the lobby after resisting security," Detective Torres revealed, pulling a pair of latex gloves from her pocket. "We recovered his phone. Even though he deleted the message from the group chat, our forensic tech confirmed the server metadata matches the file your sister provided."

I let out a long, shuddering breath. Tears of relief streamed down my cheeks.

"And his mother?" I asked.

"Beatrice Vance was detained as an accessory to felony domestic battery and torture of a pregnant individual," Detective Torres continued, taking out a digital voice recorder. "Maya, I need to take your official statement right now. We are filing for an emergency, non-bailable hold."

I looked at Chloe, who reached out and took my left hand, squeezing it tightly. Then I looked at Detective Torres.

"I will tell you everything," I said, my voice ringing clear and steady through the quiet room. "Every single word."
