Chapter 4 - The Corporate Coup(Length: ~1800 words)

Three weeks passed.
The story of Julian and Beatrice Vance’s arrest had exploded across local news outlets, turning the once-reputed Vance Real Estate Trust into a public pariah. Dozens of commercial tenants were breaking their leases, and major investors were demanding immediate withdrawal of their funds.
I was staying at Chloe’s secure condo complex uptown, surrounded by high-level security guards Marcus had arranged. My foot was healing well, though I still required a light brace to walk.
At 10:00 AM, Marcus walked into Chloe’s living room carrying two large box files.
"Good morning, Maya," Marcus said, laying the boxes on the dining table. "We just received the forensic audit report from the state financial regulators."
Chloe poured him a cup of green tea. "What did they find?"
"It’s far bigger than we anticipated," Marcus revealed, pulling out a thick spreadsheet. "Beatrice and Arthur Vance haven't just been running a real estate firm. For the past six years, they have been running a massive commercial mortgage fraud scheme."
I leaned over the table, examining the numbers. "Mortgage fraud?"
"To keep the Vance Trust looking profitable to high-net-worth investors," Marcus explained, "Beatrice was taking out fraudulent secondary mortgages on properties they didn't fully own—including three commercial buildings that belonged to minority investors. When your father passed away and left you that downtown property, Beatrice needed your title to secure a three-million-dollar emergency loan to cover an impending bank audit."
"That's why they were so desperate," I realized, the pieces finally falling into place. "If I didn't sign the deed, the bank audit would proceed, and their entire fraud scheme would fall apart!"
"Exactly," Marcus nodded. "Which brings us to our next move. As a injured victim of felony extortion, state civil law allows us to petition for an emergency receivership over Vance Real Estate LLC to satisfy potential civil damages."
"Receivership?" Chloe asked. "What does that mean?"
"It means," Marcus smiled, a sharp, triumphant glint in his eyes, "we can ask the court to strip Arthur Vance of his managing authority and appoint a neutral third-party trustee—or in this case, Maya as the primary creditor—to control the company's operational decisions until trial."
My heart hammered against my ribs. "I would have control over their firm?"
"You would have the power to audit every single account, freeze executive salaries, and liquidate corporate assets to pay off the fraud victims," Marcus said. "You would completely dismantle the engine they used to abuse you."
An hour later, Marcus filed the emergency petition with the Chancery Division.
By 3:00 PM, the Chancery Judge granted the order.
At 4:30 PM, I arrived at the high-rise corporate headquarters of Vance Real Estate in a sleek black town car, accompanied by Marcus, two court-appointed receiver officers, and three uniformed police officers.
The marble lobby was quiet. When the receptionist saw me walk through the glass doors using a sleek wooden cane, her eyes went wide with shock.
"Mrs. Vance..." she stammered, standing up.
"I'm here to see Arthur Vance," I said calmly.
We took the private elevator to the top floor.
Inside the corner executive office, Arthur Vance was frantically shoving files into a leather briefcase while two assistants cleared out his desk drawers.
When the door swung open and I walked in flanked by police officers, Arthur froze, a stack of folders slipping from his shaking hands and scattering across the Persian rug.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Arthur bellowed, trying to regain his composure. "Maya! You have no right to be on these premises! This is private corporate property!"
Marcus stepped forward, holding a stamped court order signed by the Chancery Judge.
"Mr. Vance," Marcus said calmly. "Under Court Order 2026-CV, Maya Vance has been appointed as the primary creditor receiver of Vance Real Estate LLC. All managing authority held by you, Beatrice Vance, or Julian Vance is hereby suspended effective immediately."
Arthur gasped, grabbing the edge of his mahogany desk for balance. "You... you can't do this! This company has been in our family for thirty years!"
"And you ran it into the ground with fraud, theft, and extortion," I said, stepping closer to his desk, my cane clicking firmly against the hardwood floor. "Officers, please escort Mr. Vance and his staff off the premises. All server access codes and corporate keys are to be surrendered immediately."
"Maya! Please!" Arthur pleaded, his face turning pale as two police officers took him by the arms. "We can make a deal! Don't ruin everything!"
"You ruined yourselves the day you let Julian raise that hammer," I said softly, my voice filled with cold, absolute truth.
As Arthur was escorted out of the building in front of his entire corporate staff, I sat down in the executive leather chair behind the desk.

I looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline, placing my hand over my baby bump.
The fear was gone. The nightmare was over. I was no longer the girl tied to an iron frame—I was the woman taking back her destiny.
