Chapter 5 - The Criminal Trial(Length: ~1800 words)

Four months later.

The main courtroom of the State Superior Court was packed with journalists, legal observers, and members of the public.

I sat in the front row of the gallery wearing an elegant ivory maternity dress. My baby bump was round and full—I was eight months pregnant now, radiant, healthy, and surrounded by Chloe, Marcus, and Detective Torres.

Sitting at the defense table in hand-cuffs and leg shackles was Julian Vance.

Beside him sat Beatrice Vance, who was attending the trial under house arrest monitoring. Both of them looked exhausted, their once-arrogant demeanors completely erased by four months of intense legal pressure and public exposure.

Their high-priced defense attorney, Jonathan Hayes, looked equally defeated as he sat before a mountain of evidence provided by the District Attorney.

Assistant District Attorney Karen Walsh stood before the jury box, holding a metallic object wrapped in clear evidence plastic: the steel hammer.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury," ADA Walsh began, her voice echoing powerfully through the room. "The defense wants you to believe that this was a private marital argument. They want you to believe that Julian Vance lost his temper and that Beatrice Vance was merely a helpless spectator."

Walsh walked over to the evidence podium and tapped a laptop screen.

"But the evidence proves otherwise," Walsh continued as the large courtroom monitors clicked on. "We have provided forensically verified video showing Julian Vance striking his pregnant wife while she was tied to an iron frame. We have provided audio recordings of extortion and bribery. And we have established a financial motive involving multi-million-dollar mortgage fraud."

Walsh turned to the jury. "This was not a mistake. This was an act of brutal, premeditated violence."

The prosecution called its primary witness: me.

Supported by Marcus, I walked up to the witness stand, took the oath, and sat down in the wooden box.

ADA Walsh stepped toward me warmly. "Mrs. Vance, please state your name for the record."

"Maya Vance," I replied clearly.

"Maya, can you tell the court what happened on the afternoon of October 12th?"

I took a deep breath, looking straight at the twelve jury members.

"My husband, Julian, told me we were going down to the basement to check on some storage boxes," I began, my voice steady and unwavering. "Once we were inside, he grabbed my wrists and tied them to the iron security doorframe with coarse rope."

In the gallery, several jurors gasped softly.

"I begged him to stop," I continued. "I reminded him I was five months pregnant. But his mother, Beatrice, walked downstairs holding a steel hammer. She handed it to Julian and said that if I didn't sign over my late father's commercial property, they would make sure I couldn't leave."

"And what happened next?" Walsh asked softly.

"Julian raised the hammer and hit my right foot," I said, pointing to the scar near my ankle. "While I screamed in agony, Beatrice stood there smiling and told him to hit me harder because I hadn't learned my place."

Julian lowered his head onto the defense table, weeping softly in shame, while Beatrice sat motionless, staring at her lap.

"And why did they share the video in the group chat?" Walsh asked.

"Because they wanted to humiliate me," I replied, my eyes locking onto Julian. "They wanted my family to see that I was completely broken and under their control. But they forgot one thing: my sister saved the truth."

Jonathan Hayes declined to cross-examine me. The defense had no arguments left.

The jury deliberated for less than ninety minutes.

When they returned to the courtroom, the foreperson stood up, holding the verdict sheet.

"On Count 1: Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon—we find the defendant, Julian Vance, GUILTY." "On Count 2: Domestic Torture—GUILTY." "On Count 3: Child Endangerment—GUILTY." "On Count 4: Felony Extortion—GUILTY."

"On Count 5: Accessory to Domestic Torture—we find the defendant, Beatrice Vance, GUILTY." "On Count 6: Felony Extortion—GUILTY."

Loud gasps and applause erupted from the gallery. Judge Evelyn Reed slammed her gavel down to restore order.

"Sentencing will take place in two weeks," Judge Reed declared sternly. "The defendants are remanded into custody without bail."

As sheriff's deputies hauled Julian and Beatrice away in chains, Julian turned back toward me, tears streaming down his face. "Maya... I'm sorry... please!"

I placed both hands over my baby bump, felt a strong, healthy kick from my baby, and turned my back on him for the final time.
