Chapter 9 - The Final Letter(Length: ~1800 words)

One year later.
A thick white envelope arrived at my office desk bearing the stamp of the State Department of Corrections.
It was a letter from Julian Vance.
I sat in my sunlit office, holding the unopened envelope in my hands. Marcus was sitting across from me, reviewing quarterly financial reports for the Miller Foundation.
"You don't have to read it, Maya," Marcus offered gently. "I can shred it for you."
I looked at the envelope for a long moment. Then, with complete calm and composure, I opened it and pulled out the single sheet of yellow lined paper.
Julian’s handwriting was messy and uncertain:
Maya,
I am writing this from my cell. I know you will probably throw this away, but I need to say it. Every single day, I wake up and realize what a monster I was. I listened to my mother, I let greed ruin my soul, and I hurt the only person who ever truly loved me.
I know I will never see you or my daughter. I know I lost everything, and I deserve every year of this sentence. I don't ask for your forgiveness—I know I don't deserve it. I just hope Hope grows up knowing her mother is the strongest woman in the world.
Julian.
I read the letter slowly.
There was no anger left in my heart. No fear. No resentment. Just a deep, tranquil feeling of closure.
I folded the paper, walked over to the fireplace in my office, and dropped it into the small, warm flame.

I watched the yellow paper turn to ash, rising into the chimney and vanishing into the air.
He was a ghost of a past that no longer had any power over me. My life was moving forward, filled with light, purpose, and unshakeable strength.
