Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail(Length: ~1800 words)

The morning sun filtered through the blinds of my hospital room, casting long, clean stripes of light across the white bedsheets. The sharp pain in my foot had dulled to a heavy ache thanks to the nerve block the doctors had administered, but my mind was clearer than it had been in months.
Sitting at the foot of my bed was Marcus Sterling—the top domestic violence and high-asset family law attorney in the state, whom Chloe had retained using our joint savings account early that morning.
Marcus was a sharp-eyed man in his early fifties with silvering hair and an unyielding aura of authority. He had spread three blue folders across his lap, reviewing the initial police reports alongside the forensic screenshots Chloe had provided.
"Maya," Marcus said smoothly, looking up over his reading glasses. "I’ve reviewed the footage. It is without question one of the most chilling pieces of evidence I have encountered in my twenty-five years of practice."
Chloe stood near the window, sipping a black coffee. "Will the prosecutor be able to keep them locked up?"
"Julian is facing charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, domestic torture, and child endangerment regarding your unborn baby," Marcus explained. "Because he proudly uploaded the video to his family group chat with the caption 'Teaching her a lesson before dinner,' the intent is indisputable. He handed the District Attorney an open-and-shut case on a silver platter."
"What about Beatrice?" I asked, my fingers tightening around the bedsheets. "Julian never did anything without his mother's approval. She was the one who handed him the hammer. She watched him hit me while I was tied up."
Marcus pulled a second folder from his briefcase.
"Beatrice Vance is currently being held on a five-hundred-thousand-dollar bond as an accessory to felony battery," Marcus said. "Her defense attorneys are already claiming she was merely a 'passive bystander' who was too frail to intervene."
"Frail?" I let out a dry, bitter laugh. "She runs the Vance Real Estate Trust with an iron fist! She threatened to cut Julian out of his inheritance if he didn't 'discipline' me for refusing to transfer my late father's estate into her company account!"
Marcus stopped, his eyes narrowing sharply. "Say that again, Maya."
"My father passed away six months ago," I explained, leaning forward despite the discomfort in my leg. "He left me a small commercial property downtown worth about nine hundred thousand dollars. For the past three months, Beatrice and Julian have been trying to force me to sign a quitclaim deed transferring the property into the Vance Trust. That's why they tied me up yesterday. I refused to sign the transfer papers."
A slow, cold smile spread across Marcus’s face.
"That changes everything," Marcus said softly, writing rapidly on his legal pad. "This wasn't just an outburst of domestic temper. This was a premeditated, violent extortion racket designed to seize your inherited real estate assets through physical torture."
"Can we freeze their assets?" Chloe asked, stepping closer to the bed.
"Not just freeze them," Marcus replied, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "In civil court, we can file an emergency petition under the Fraudulent Transfer Act and the Victims of Violent Crimes Statute. We will lock down every bank account, property, and trust fund associated with Beatrice Vance and Vance Real Estate LLC before her lawyers even figure out what hit them."
Just then, my phone buzzed on the bedside table.
It was a call from an unrecognized number. I looked at Marcus, who nodded gently.
"Put it on speaker, Maya," Marcus instructed. "State law permits recording when investigating felony extortion."
I tapped the screen and set the phone on speaker. "Hello?"
"Maya? Is that you?" A frantic, high-pitched voice came screeching through the small speaker. It was Arthur Vance—Julian’s uncle and the chief financial managing director of the Vance family trust.
"Arthur," I said coldly.
"Maya, thank God!" Arthur stammered, breathing heavily. "Look, this whole thing is a horrific misunderstanding! Julian is in a holding cell! Beatrice’s blood pressure is dangerously high in the jail ward! The police are refusing to grant bail!"
"It isn't a misunderstanding, Arthur," I said, my voice dripping with ice. "Julian tied me to an iron doorframe while I was carrying his child and struck my foot with a hammer. Your sister stood there and watched."
"He was stressed! He lost his temper!" Arthur pleaded desperately. "Look, Maya, we are family! Think about the baby! If Julian goes to prison, your child will grow up with a felon for a father! The family reputation will be completely destroyed!"
"Your family reputation is already garbage, Arthur," Chloe interjected sharply into the phone.
"Who is that? Chloe?" Arthur shouted. "Maya, listen to me! If you drop the charges and agree to tell the police the video was a staged joke for social media, the family trust will pay you two million dollars cash immediately! You can take the money, move into a private villa, and we will handle Julian privately!"
Marcus stepped closer to the phone, his voice echoing loudly in the room.
"Mr. Arthur Vance," Marcus said with lethal precision. "This is Marcus Sterling, lead counsel for Maya Vance. You have just committed felony witness tampering and bribery on a recorded phone line."
There was an immediate, terrifying silence on the other end of the line.
"What... who did you say this was?" Arthur stammered, his voice suddenly cracking with sheer panic.
"This call has been recorded and submitted directly to Detective Torres and the District Attorney's office," Marcus declared. "If you or any member of the Vance family attempts to contact my client again, warrants will be issued for your immediate arrest for obstruction of justice. Good day, sir."
Marcus pressed the disconnect button.
Chloe let out a cheered laugh, while I sank back against my pillows, a profound feeling of strength surging through me.
May you like
For two years, the Vance family had treated me like a helpless, disposable outsider. They had used fear, isolation, and violence to keep me under their thumbs. But they had made one fatal mistake: they thought my silence was weakness.
"Get some rest, Maya," Marcus said warmly, packing his papers into his briefcase. "Because tomorrow morning, we go to court to take everything they own."
