Chapter 2 - The Secret Architect(Length: ~1800 words)

The media cameras flashed continuously in the gallery. Jason’s high-priced attorney, Arthur Vance, scrambled to his feet, slamming his heavy leather folder onto the defense table.

"Objection, Your Honor!" Arthur shouted, his voice echoing off the high wood-paneled walls. "This is a standard civil dissolution hearing! Opposing counsel is attempting to turn a simple asset distribution into a sensationalized media circus! My client’s private medical history and personal marriage details have no legal bearing on the prenuptial agreement!"

"Sit down, Mr. Vance," Judge Eleanor Vance ordered, her stern gaze locked entirely on me. "Mrs. Mitchell, you have the court’s undivided attention. Explain what these scars represent."

Jason reached out, frantically grabbing his lawyer's sleeve. "Arthur, stop her," he hissed in a panicked whisper. "Shut this down right now!"

I stepped out from behind the table, standing straight and tall.

"Six years ago," I began, my voice carrying clearly through the silent room, "Mitchell Medical Technologies filed three international patents for the Aegis Bio-Valve—a revolutionary artificial heart valve that currently generates over eighty million dollars in annual revenue for my husband’s firm."

The reporters in the gallery began furiously taking notes.

"Publicly," I continued, "Jason Mitchell claimed sole credit as the master inventor. He gave interviews to Forbes, accepted humanitarian awards, and built his multi-million-dollar empire on that single breakthrough. But the truth is, Jason is not a biomedical engineer. He was a marketing major who couldn't read a chemical schematic if his life depended on it."

"This is slander!" Jason yelled, standing up and pointing a trembling finger at me. "Your Honor, she’s lying! I built that company from the ground up in my garage!"

"Silence, Mr. Mitchell!" Judge Vance slammed her gavel down with a deafening CRACK. "One more outburst and I will have the bailiff remove you to a holding cell!"

Jason sank back into his chair, breathing heavily, sweat breaking out across his forehead. Beside him, Madison looked increasingly uncomfortable, backing slightly away from him as if realizing the ground beneath her feet was crumbling.

"The real architect of the Aegis Bio-Valve," I stated, holding my head high, "was me. Six years ago, while working thirty-six-hour shifts in our private, uncertified home laboratory, a pressurized testing chamber ruptured due to faulty valves Jason had bought cheap off the black market to save money. The resulting chemical fire burned thirty percent of my body."

I held up my right arm, allowing the court and the cameras to see the jagged surgical tracks running from my wrist to my elbow.

"While I lay in a medically induced coma at a private clinic in Vermont," I revealed, "Jason forced my sedated hand to sign a complete transfer of all intellectual property rights to his personal LLC. He then paid off the clinic doctor, buried the accident report, and threatened to leave me penniless and institutionalized if I ever spoke a word to the press."

Daniel Brooks stepped forward, opening a thick leather briefcase and laying a stack of certified documents onto the judge’s bench.

"Your Honor," Daniel declared sharply, "we are submitting into evidence the original laboratory logbooks, dated six years ago, signed in Mrs. Mitchell’s handwriting, alongside the original patent drafts bearing her chemical signatures. Furthermore, we have a sworn affidavit from the lead technician who witnessed the explosion and was bribed fifty thousand dollars by Jason Mitchell to stay quiet."

Judge Vance flipped through the pages, her face growing darker with every second.

"This signature on the transfer deed," Judge Vance noted, raising her eyes to glare at Jason. "It was notarized while Mrs. Mitchell was admitted into ICU under heavy narcotics. Mr. Vance, how do you explain this?"

Jason’s attorney looked like he was about to vomit. "Your Honor... we... we were not made aware of these specific medical records by our client."

"You didn't know because Jason lies to everyone," I said, turning my gaze to Madison Brooks. "Including his mistress."

Madison flinched as if she had been slapped. "What is she talking about, Jason?" she whispered frantically. "You told me she was just an unemployed housewife who lived off your charity!"

"Shut up, Madison!" Jason snarled under his breath.

"Daniel," I said to my attorney. "Show her the second envelope."

Daniel pulled a thin red folder from his briefcase and walked across the aisle, setting it directly in front of Madison.

"My client thought you should see this, Madison," Daniel said, his tone dripping with professional coldness. "Considering you spent the last two years helping Jason transfer assets out of the country."

Madison hesitantly opened the folder. Inside were bank records from offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland—accounts registered under Jason’s name and another woman’s name entirely.

"What... who is Chloe?" Madison gasped, her eyes widening in horror as she read the transfer statements. "You transferred three million dollars to a condo in Miami last month?! You told me we were moving to Paris after the divorce!"

The courtroom erupted into quiet murmurs and stifled laughter.

"You idiot!" Jason yelled at Madison, grabbing the folder out of her hands. "Don't read that in here!"

"You lied to me!" Madison shrieked, standing up and shoving Jason hard in the chest. "You told me I was the only one! You told me you were going to make me vice president of the company!"

"Order! Order in the court!" Judge Vance banged her gavel repeatedly. "Bailiffs, secure the defense table!"

Two armed bailiffs immediately stepped forward, placing their hands on their holsters as they surrounded Jason and Madison.

I stood calmly at the plaintiff's table, watching the chaos unfold. For ten years, Jason Mitchell had manipulated everyone around him using money, lies, and intimidation. He had used my brilliant mind to build his fortune, locked me away when I became scarred and broken, and treated me like trash he could throw away when he got bored.

He thought he was walking into a court to finalize my execution. He didn't realize I had spent the last two years laying the explosives beneath his entire life.

"Your Honor," Daniel Brooks announced over the noise, "in light of these revelations regarding patent theft, fraud, and corporate embezzlement, we request an immediate emergency freeze on all assets belonging to Mitchell Medical Technologies and Jason Mitchell personally."

Judge Vance didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Request granted," Judge Vance declared firmly. "All bank accounts, real estate holdings, and corporate shares associated with Mr. Mitchell are officially frozen pending a federal criminal investigation. Mr. Mitchell, you will surrender your passport to the bailiff immediately."

Jason looked around the courtroom like a trapped animal. The reporters were snapping photos of his pale, panic-stricken face. His mistress was crying and cursing at him. His attorney was rapidly packing his bags to abandon ship.

He looked at me, his eyes filled with absolute terror.

May you like

"Iris... please," Jason begged, his voice trembling uncontrollably. "We can talk about this! We're husband and wife! We can work something out!"

"We have nothing left to talk about, Jason," I said quietly, picking up my gray coat and putting it back over my shoulders. "I'll see you at your criminal arraignment."
