Chapter 8 - The Criminal Sentencing(Length: ~1800 words)

Six months later.
The federal courthouse downtown was packed once again for the final criminal sentencing of Jason Mitchell.
Jason sat at the defense table wearing a dark jumpsuit, his hands and ankles bound by heavy iron chains. His physical transformation was complete—he looked broken, aged, and hollowed out by six months in maximum-security detention.
Sitting beside him was a public defender who looked thoroughly exhausted by his client's endless complaints.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a green silk suit, accompanied by Daniel and Marcus Thorne.
Judge Eleanor Vance took the bench, her expression grim as she adjusted her glasses and looked down at the court documents.
"Mr. Mitchell," Judge Vance declared, her voice echoing sternly through the quiet room. "Over the past six months, this court has reviewed over ten thousand pages of financial records, medical logbooks, and witness testimonies detailing your corporate fraud, patent theft, tax evasion, and systemic abuse."
Jason kept his head bowed, staring at his cuffed wrists.
"You took advantage of your wife’s brilliant intellect," Judge Vance continued, her tone sharp as a razor. "When she was injured in an accident caused by your own negligence, you forced her to sign away her rights, isolated her from society, and used her work to fund a life of obscene vanity and greed."
Judge Vance stacked the files together and picked up her gavel.
"On the charges of federal wire fraud and tax evasion, I sentence you to fifteen years in federal prison," Judge Vance announced. "On the charges of patent theft, forgery, and reckless endangerment, I sentence you to an additional ten years, to run consecutively."
Jason gasped loudly, his shoulders slumping as if he had been struck by a heavy blow. "Twenty... twenty-five years?!" he choked out, looking back toward the gallery with wide, panicked eyes.
"Furthermore," Judge Vance added, "you are ordered to pay ninety-four million dollars in total restitution to Vance Biomedical Holdings. Court is adjourned."
CRACK!
The gavel struck the wooden block, sealing Jason’s fate forever.
Two armed federal marshals grabbed Jason’s arms, pulling him up from his chair to lead him toward the side exit.
As he was marched past the gallery, Jason caught sight of me sitting in the front row.
He stopped for a fraction of a second, looking at me with eyes full of absolute regret, sorrow, and defeat. He was thirty-eight years old; when he got out of prison, he would be an old, penniless man in his sixties, completely forgotten by the world he had tried to conquer.
"Iris..." he whispered, his voice cracking with tears.
I didn't answer. I didn't scowl. I simply offered him a quiet, polite nod—the final goodbye to a ghost from my past.
The marshals pushed him through the heavy iron door, and the lock clicked shut with a loud, definitive sound.

Daniel reached over, gently taking my hand in his. "It's over, Iris. Completely over."
I took a deep, peaceful breath, feeling a wave of absolute stillness wash over my soul. "Yes, Daniel. It's finally over."
