Chapter 3 - The Unraveling(Length: ~1800 words)

By four o'clock that afternoon, news of the courtroom spectacle had shattered the financial market.

The front page of every major business outlet featured the stunning photograph of me standing in Courtroom 402, showing my scars, alongside the headline:

"THE REAL BRAINS BEHIND MITCHELL MEDICAL: TROPHY WIFE EXPOSES MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR PATENT FRAUD"

Share prices for Mitchell Medical Technologies plummeted by eighty-two percent in less than three hours. Board members were resigning in droves, and federal agents were already executing search warrants at the company's downtown headquarters.

I sat in the sleek, glass-walled conference room of Brooks & Associates, drinking a warm cup of tea. Daniel walked in, setting a fresh stack of legal documents on the table.

"The federal prosecutor just filed formal charges," Daniel reported with a satisfied smile. "Wire fraud, patent theft, tax evasion, and obstruction of justice. Jason’s personal bail has been set at five million dollars, and since all his bank accounts are frozen, he’s currently sitting in a holding cell because he can't pay the bail bondsman."

I took a slow sip of my tea, feeling the warmth spread through my chest. "And Madison?"

"She’s currently at the precinct offering full state testimony against Jason in exchange for immunity," Daniel said, sitting down across from me. "She handed over every text message, email, and offshore transfer record Jason sent her over the last eighteen months. She was terrified she’d end up in prison as a co-conspirator."

"She brought it on herself," I noted quietly. "She knew he was married. She thought she was replacing me at the top of the mountain."

"She learned the hard way that Jason’s mountain was built on quicksand," Daniel replied. He looked at me with deep respect. "Iris, what you did in that courtroom today... it took unimaginable courage."

I looked down at my hands. "For six years, Daniel, I let him make me feel like I was hideous. He told me nobody would ever look at me without disgust because of these scars. He convinced me that without his money and protection, I was nothing. I stayed in that mansion like a ghost because I believed him."

"And today?" Daniel asked gently.

"Today, I realized those scars aren't a sign of my weakness," I said, looking up with complete clarity. "They're proof that I survived the fire he built. And now, I’m going to take back everything that belongs to me."

Just then, Daniel’s assistant knocked on the glass door.

"Mr. Brooks," the assistant said nervously. "Jason Mitchell’s lead investor, Marcus Thorne, is on line one. He says he needs to speak with Mrs. Mitchell immediately."

I nodded to Daniel. "Put him on speaker."

A deep, powerful voice filled the conference room. Marcus Thorne was a legendary venture capitalist who owned thirty percent of Mitchell Medical shares—the man whose capital had funded the company's mass production.

"Mrs. Mitchell," Marcus said directly, cutting straight to the point. "I just finished reviewing the laboratory logbooks your attorney submitted to the court. As an engineer myself, I recognized your mathematical proofs instantly. Jason couldn't calculate a basic fluid dynamic equation to save his life."

"Thank you, Mr. Thorne," I replied calmly. "I assume you're calling to discuss the emergency board meeting?"

"I’m calling to tell you that the board has just unanimously voted to remove Jason Mitchell as CEO," Marcus revealed. "Furthermore, as the rightful owner of the underlying patents, we want to offer you thirty-five percent equity in a restructured entity, alongside the position of Chief Technology Officer."

I leaned back in my chair, a small, triumphant smile touching my lips.

"Forty-five percent equity, Mr. Thorne," I countered smoothly. "And sole voting control over all future biomedical patents. Otherwise, I pull the Aegis Bio-Valve licensing rights entirely, and your company liquidates by Friday."

Silence hung on the line for three long seconds. Then, Marcus Thorne let out a booming laugh.

"You really were the intellect behind that company all along," Marcus said with genuine admiration. "Deal, Mrs. Mitchell. The emergency board contract will be delivered to your attorney within the hour."

I hung up the phone and looked out the high window at the city skyline.

The man who had promised I would be begging on the streets before the month was over was currently sitting in a cold concrete jail cell, broke, abandoned, and facing decades in federal prison.

And I was about to become the undisputed leader of the medical empire I had created with my own hands.
