Chapter 6 - Armor of the Fallen

The private estate in Charlottesville was bathed in morning sunlight.

Nova stood on the stone veranda, watching Kai push their mother in a wheelchair through the manicured rose gardens. For the first time in five years, Denise wasn't gasping for breath. The relief on her mother’s face was worth more than all the gold in the world.

A soft knock sounded behind her.

Ruth Mercer walked out onto the terrace. In her hands, the elderly philanthropist carried an antique velvet box.

"How is your mother?" Ruth asked gently.

"She’s smiling," Nova said, turning around. "Thank you, Ruth. Truly."

"Don't thank me, Nova. You gave me back my granddaughter Lily. She’s twenty-two now. She just graduated from Johns Hopkins with a degree in pediatric medicine. Every single day she breathes is a gift you bought with your blood."

Ruth opened the velvet box. Inside rested a polished medal: the *Presidential Cross of Valor for Extraordinary Humanitarian Courage*, accompanied by a small gold pin bearing the fractured silver circle.

"They sealed your name," Ruth said, her voice trembling. "They couldn't give you the parade you deserved. But the President, the Secretary of Defense, and every ambassador in Europe signed this citation. It has been locked in my private vault for nine years, waiting for the day you were ready to claim it."

Nova stared at the ribbon. A wave of memories crashed over her—the smoke, the heat, the sound of terrified children crying in the dark, the final explosion that had ripped her flesh apart.

"I hid because I wanted peace, Ruth," Nova whispered. "I thought if I made myself small enough, quiet enough, the world would forget me."

"You are not small, Nova Reyes," Ruth said fiercely, placing her hand over Nova’s scarred wrist. "And quiet is not peace. Quiet is just letting monsters like Brooke Hathaway believe they run the earth because no one punches back."

At that moment, the terrace door opened. Ambassador Morel and Judge Reed entered, followed by Grayson Cole.

"We just finished a conference call with the Director of the FBI and the Department of Justice," Judge Reed announced, his eyes glittering with triumph. "Victor Kane’s agency has been raided. The FBI seized Kane’s servers an hour ago. Guess what they found?"

Grayson smiled grimly. "Brooke Hathaway didn't just hire him to dig up dirt on Nova. For the past three years, Brooke has been embezzling money from the Richmond Children’s Relief Foundation to pay Kane for blackmail material on political rivals—including her own father’s committee members."

"She’s walking straight into the gallows," Ambassador Morel chuckled. "She invited sixty major news networks to tonight’s gala to destroy Nova. Every major network in the country has sent a broadcast van."

Nova picked up the velvet box. She looked at Grayson, then at the three titans who stood ready to walk into the fire beside her.

"Priya," Nova said into her phone. "I need you to alter a dress for me tonight."
