Chapter 8 - The Verdict of Truth

Nova stepped onto the stage. She didn't shout. She didn't rush. The sheer gravitational pull of her presence made Brooke take three involuntary steps backward.
Judge Malcolm Reed took the podium microphone.
"My name is Malcolm Reed, retired Chief Justice of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals," the old man boomed into the national broadcast feed. "And what you have just heard from Brooke Hathaway is not journalism. It is slander, defamation, and federal obstruction of justice."
The press corps went wild, lenses whirring.
Ambassador Elias Morel stepped up next. "Nine years ago, during the Caelum crisis, twenty-two American and Allied children—including my own daughter and Ruth Mercer’s granddaughter—were held hostage by an international human trafficking cartel. When regular military forces deemed the compound a lost cause, Operative Nova Reyes entered the compound alone."
Ruth Mercer took the microphone, tears rolling openly down her face.
"She took bullet wounds and shrapnel to save our children. She stayed behind to ensure the evacuation bird could take off while the compound burned around her. The federal government sealed her identity not because she was a criminal—but because she was the bravest hero this country has ever produced, and criminal syndicates placed a bounty on her head!"
A stunned, suffocating silence gripped the two hundred guests. Socialites looked at each other in absolute horror at what they had laughed at two nights prior.
Brooke’s face had drained of all color. "No... no! That’s a lie! She was disgraced! She—"
"The only disgrace in this room is you, Brooke," Grayson Cole’s voice cut through the air.
Grayson pointed toward the giant projection screen.
The image of Nova’s forged files disappeared, replaced by high-definition banking records, wire transfer receipts, and recorded audio files seized by the FBI.
*"Victor,"* Brooke’s recorded voice played through the ballroom speakers, crisp and venomous. *"Transfer two hundred thousand from the Children’s Foundation account into Kane’s offshore fund. I want that maid broken. I want her mother’s medical records leaked, and I want her brother terrified."*
Screams of outrage erupted from the tables.
Senator Richard Hathaway buried his face in his hands, turning his back on his own daughter. Donors began shouting in disgust.
Two federal marshals in dark suits stepped through the ballroom doors, followed by four Richmond police officers.
The lead marshal walked up the stage stairs, holding a set of steel handcuffs.
"Brooke Hathaway," the marshal announced. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, conspiracy, and federal witness tampering under the Title 18 Protection Act."
Brooke began to scream, kicking and thrashing as the cold steel cuffs snapped around her wrists. "Dad! Dad, do something! Grayson, stop them!"

Her father didn't even look up. Grayson simply watched with cold satisfaction as Brooke Hathaway was dragged out of the ballroom in front of thirty live news cameras, her emerald dress trailing through the dust of the floor she had tried to rule.
