Chapter 9 - Standing in the Light

The media storm raged outside the Richmond Grand, but inside the grand ballroom, the atmosphere transformed into something sacred.

The two hundred elite guests—the same people who had snickered when chocolate was flicked onto Nova's uniform—rose to their feet as one.

The applause started with an elderly veteran in the front row. Then Ambassador Morel. Then the entire room.

A deafening, thunderous standing ovation shook the crystal chandeliers. Billionaires, judges, and foreign diplomats cheered until their voices were hoarse, honoring the woman who had walked among them as a servant while possessing the heart of a titan.

Nova stood on the stage, her hand resting over her medal. She looked at the crowd. For nine years, she had believed that invisibility was her only shield. She had believed that surviving meant disappearing.

Now, looking out at the standing ovation, she realized that light wasn't a danger—it was a weapon against the dark.

Grayson walked up beside her. He gently took her scarred hand and brought it to his lips, kissing the white mark of shrapnel in front of every camera in the nation.

"Thank you, Nova," Grayson whispered, his voice thick with raw devotion. "For saving me then. And for saving me tonight."

Two hours later, the ballroom had cleared, leaving only the quiet hum of the night staff cleaning the floors.

Priya stood by the grand staircase with tears in her eyes, holding a warm coat. Nova walked over and wrapped the older woman in a fierce, tight embrace.

"You knew," Nova murmured against Priya’s shoulder.

"I knew you were royalty in disguise, baby," Priya sniffled, wiping her eyes. "A uniform doesn't hide lion eyes."

Suddenly, the side doors opened. Kai walked in, wearing his first tailored suit, wheeling Denise into the ballroom.

Denise looked at her daughter standing in the midnight-blue gown, the medal gleaming on her chest. Her frail mother reached out, and Nova dropped to her knees on the marble floor, burying her head in Denise’s lap.

"Look at you, my brave girl," Denise wept softly, stroking Nova’s dark hair. "No more hiding in the shadows. No more running."

"No more running, Mom," Nova promised, tears finally slipping down her cheeks. "We're safe now."

Kai knelt beside them, wrapping his arms around both of them. "You're a legend, Nova. You really are."
