Chapter 1 - The Piano's SilenceNaomi Carter knew something was wrong when the piano stopped.

For five long months, she had cared for Isabella Moretti, the seventy-one-year-old mother of Luca Moretti—the most feared, ruthless syndicate boss in the city. A massive stroke months ago had stolen most of Isabella’s speech, but it had never stolen her sharp, aristocratic mind.
Naomi had taken the time to learn her language. One low, lingering piano note meant yes. One sharp, high note meant no. It was their quiet code, a delicate bridge built between a quiet maid and a fragile matriarch in a world dominated by guns, muscle, and cold marble.
So when the music room suddenly went silent, followed by the violent crash of broken porcelain and a muffled, desperate cry, Naomi’s heart slammed into her ribs. She dropped her polishing cloth and ran down the grand corridor.
Reaching the heavy oak doors of the music room, she rattled the brass handle. It was locked from the inside.
“Go away!” Vivian Vance’s voice called out from behind the wood—sharp, condescending, and laced with panic. Vivian was Luca Moretti’s high-society fiancée, a woman who treated the estate's staff like dirt and viewed Isabella as a mere obstacle to the Moretti fortune.
Then, from inside, Isabella whimpered. A low, painful sound of utter helpless terror.
Naomi didn't hesitate. She pulled out her phone with trembling fingers and dialed Luca’s private, direct line—a number reserved strictly for life-or-death emergencies.
He picked up on the second ring, his deep, gravelly voice cutting through the speaker like ice. “Naomi. What’s wrong?”
“Please come home now,” she whispered, her voice shaking with fierce conviction. “She’s hurting your mother.”
Without waiting for his reply, Naomi hung up, grabbed a heavy brass candleholder from the hallway console, and smashed it against the antique lock with all her strength. On the third strike, the wood splintered, and the heavy door burst open.
The scene inside made Naomi’s blood run cold.
Isabella lay crumpled on the Persian rug beside the mahogany grand piano. A dark, swollen red mark stretched across her frail cheek, and her right thumb was smeared with thick, black stamp ink. Standing over her was Vivian, holding a thick legal document titled: Declaration of Medical Incapacity & Power of Attorney Transfer.
“You were forcing her fingerprint onto that,” Naomi gasped, stepping into the room, her brown eyes blazing with fury.
Vivian’s smug expression instantly melted into pure venom. “You stupid, pathetic little maid. You don't know your place!”
Realizing she had been caught red-handed, Vivian’s eyes darted frantically toward the doorway. A dark, psychotic calculation took over her face. In a flash, Vivian grabbed the edges of her own designer silk blouse and ripped it wide open. She grabbed Naomi’s arm, thrusting her fingernails into her own neck to create deep scratches, before forcefully throwing herself backward onto the floor amid the scattered papers.
“Help! Security! She’s attacking us!” Vivian shrieked at the top of her lungs, fake tears streaming down her face.
Before Naomi could even process the insane staging, heavy footsteps thundered through the grand foyer downstairs. The heavy double doors of the mansion slammed open with the force of a hurricane.
Luca Moretti’s voice echoed through the high ceilings, dark and deadly. “Where is my mother?!”
Seconds later, his towering six-foot-three frame filled the music room doorway. Armed guards rushed in behind him, guns drawn. Luca looked like a storm incarnate—dark suit, sharp jawline, and eyes like black obsidian that could freeze a man where he stood.
His eyes swept the room, taking in every single detail instantly: His bruised, weeping mother on the floor. His sobbing, disheveled fiancée clutching her scratched neck. And Naomi standing in the center of the room, holding the brass candleholder near the forged legal papers.
Vivian inhaled shakily, pointing a trembling, tear-stained finger at Naomi. “Luca! Thank God you’re here! She tried to steal the family trust documents! When Isabella tried to stop her, she hit her!”
Naomi stood frozen, her heart hammering against her ribs. “Mr. Moretti, that isn't what happened—”
“Silence!” Luca growled, his voice vibrating through the floorboards. He stepped into the room, dropping to one knee beside his frail mother. He gently cradled Isabella’s face in his gloved hands. “Mother... tell me who did this.”
The room held its breath. The guards stood at rigid attention. Vivian smirked secretly from the floor, convinced her performance was flawless.
Isabella raised one trembling, ink-stained hand. Her frail fingers shook in the air... and then she pointed directly toward Naomi.

Vivian gasped, a victorious, wicked whisper escaping her lips. “You see? She knows who did this! Kill her, Luca!”
Luca slowly turned his terrifying, lethal gaze toward Naomi.
