Chapter 2 - The Language of the KeysThe air in the music room turned instantly sub-zero. Two armed guards moved in behind Naomi, their hands resting on their holstered handguns, waiting for the single nod from Luca that would end her life.

Naomi didn't step back. She didn't scream, and she didn't beg. She locked eyes with Luca Moretti—the man who ruled the city's underworld with an iron fist—and held her ground.

"Mr. Moretti," Naomi said, her voice impossibly steady despite the terror thrumming through her veins. "Your mother isn't pointing at me to accuse me. Look at her hand. Look at where her eyes are directed."

Luca’s dark brows furrowed. He looked down at his mother. Isabella’s finger wasn't pointing at Naomi’s face or chest—it was pointing toward the piano bench right behind Naomi, where a small velvet cushion lay.

Isabella’s throat made a strained, desperate sound: "Ah... ah..."

With agonizing effort, the frail woman dragged her ink-stained hand sideways, tapping her knuckles twice against the wood of the mahogany piano leg.

Tap. Tap.

A sharp, high-frequency sound echoed through the silent room.

Luca froze. His eyes narrowed sharply. For five months, he had watched from the doorway as Naomi spent hours sitting with his silent mother, listening to the piano. He remembered what Naomi had told him during her second week of employment: She speaks through the notes, Mr. Moretti. Low means yes. High means no.

"A high note," Luca murmured, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "She's saying no."

Vivian’s face flushed pale. "Luca, don't listen to this crazy maid! Your mother is confused! She’s having a stroke episode!"

Luca didn't look at Vivian. He stood up slowly, his imposing height casting a long, dark shadow over his fiancée. He walked over to the scattered papers on the floor, picked up the legal document, and examined the fresh black ink mark at the bottom.

Then he reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a silk handkerchief, and gently wiped his mother's thumb. Beneath the ink, he saw tiny, red pinch marks where someone had forcefully squeezed her arthritic joint.

"Vivian," Luca said softly. It was the kind of soft voice that sent hardened cartel bosses running for cover. "How did ink get on my mother's thumb if Naomi was the one holding the candleholder?"

Vivian’s breath hitched. "I... I tried to pull the paper away from her!"

Luca turned to his head of security, Marco. "Pull the private security feeds from the music room hallway. The ones on the hidden secondary circuit."

Vivian’s eyes widened in pure, unadulterated horror. "Hidden... secondary circuit?"

"Did you really think," Luca leaned down, his face inches from Vivian’s pale, trembling cheek, "that I would leave my mother’s wing guarded by only visible cameras? You’ve been foolish, Vivian. But more importantly, you’ve been cruel."

Five minutes later, Marco held up a tablet. The footage was crystal clear: Vivian forcing her way into the room, slapping Isabella when she refused to cooperate, locking the door, and trying to press her finger to the document. Then, Naomi smashing the lock open, and Vivian frantically tearing her own clothes to stage the assault.

The silence in the room was absolute.

Luca walked back to his mother, lifted her gently into his arms like she weighed nothing at all, and placed her comfortably on the velvet chaise lounge. He kissed her forehead gently.

Then he turned around. The warmth in his eyes was completely gone, replaced by a cold, predatory void.

"Marco," Luca ordered flatly. "Take Miss Vance to the basement holding rooms. Contact her father. Tell him the Vance family's lines of credit are officially liquidated, and their shipping contracts are canceled effective immediately."

Vivian began to scream and thrash as two massive guards grabbed her arms, dragging her ruthlessly out of the room. "Luca! No! Please! It was a mistake! I did it for us! You can't do this to me!"

Her screams faded down the long marble corridor until the heavy front doors slammed shut.

The room fell completely silent again.

Naomi stood near the piano, her sleeve still torn, her chest heaving as the adrenaline finally began to leave her body.

Luca turned his gaze toward her. He walked over slowly, stopping just inches from her. He reached out his gloved hand, gently taking hold of her torn sleeve.

"You broke my lock," he murmured, his voice rich and deep.

"I had to save her," Naomi whispered back, refusing to look down.

Luca looked down at the floor, where the forged power of attorney document lay ruined. Then he looked up into Naomi’s brown eyes—eyes filled with fierce, unyielding protection for a woman who wasn't even her blood.

"You saved my mother," Luca corrected softly. "And in this city, Naomi Carter... those who protect my family become untouchable."
