Chapter 3 - The Bloodline DebtBy midnight, the Moretti estate was locked down under absolute security clearance. Extra guards flanked the perimeter, and the top medical specialists in the state were flown in by private helicopter to attend to Isabella.

Inside the master medical suite, Isabella lay tucked under silk sheets, resting comfortably with an IV drip. Naomi sat in a chair beside the bed, softly stroking the old woman’s hand until her breathing stabilized into deep sleep.
The heavy door creaked open, and Luca stepped inside. He had removed his suit jacket, rolling up his crisp white shirt sleeves to reveal dark, intricate tattoos creeping up his forearms—symbols of the Moretti syndicate's historical bloodline.
He stood on the opposite side of the bed, watching Naomi.
"The doctor said her blood pressure is stabilizing," Naomi whispered, keeping her voice low so as not to wake Isabella. "She just needs rest. And no more stress."
"She hasn't smiled like that in three years," Luca noted quietly, his dark eyes fixed on Naomi’s exhausted face. "Not since my father died."
"She's a strong woman, Mr. Moretti. She just wanted someone to hear her."
Luca pulled out a chair and sat down across from Naomi. For the first time since she had started working at the estate, the terrifying mafia boss looked human—weary, weighed down by the crushing responsibility of his empire.
"My engagement to Vivian was a business alliance," Luca confessed calmly. "Her father controls the northern docks. I needed his logistics network to expand our legitimate shipping operations. I tolerated her arrogance because I thought she was harmless."
He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "I almost let a snake into this house. If you hadn't called me... if you hadn't broken down that door..."
"I did what anyone with a heart would do," Naomi said simply.
"No," Luca countered, his tone hardening with absolute conviction. "People in my world don't act out of heart. They act out of greed or fear. You had no power, no protection, and everything to lose. Yet you fought a woman worth billions to protect an old lady who couldn't even speak your name."
He reached into his pocket and placed a black velvet box on the nightstand between them.
Naomi blinked. "What is that?"
"Consider it the first part of your compensation," Luca said.
Naomi opened the box. Inside lay an exquisite, platinum key card emblazoned with a gold crest, along with a black centurion card bearing her name: Naomi Carter.
"I can't accept this," Naomi immediately protested, pushing the box back across the table. "I am a hired caregiver, Mr. Moretti. I get paid a salary."
"Your salary just increased by a factor of ten," Luca said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "And that keycard gives you full clearance to every estate, vehicle, and safehouse owned by Moretti Enterprises. From this moment on, you are not staff."
Naomi frowned. "Then what am I?"
Luca stood up, his tall frame looming over her. "You are my mother's personal guardian. And under Moretti law, anyone who holds that title is under my personal protection. Anyone who touches you answers directly to me."
Before Naomi could process his words, a frantic knock sounded at the door. Marco stepped inside, his expression grim.
"Boss," Marco reported in a low voice. "Arthur Vance just pulled up to the main gate with four carloads of armed men. He’s demanding to see his daughter... and he brought the city police chief with him."
Naomi felt a cold knot form in her stomach. The Vance family wasn't just wealthy; they had political power.

Luca didn't even flinch. A slow, chilling smile touched the corners of his lips. He adjusted his cuffs and looked down at Naomi.
"Stay here with my mother," Luca said smoothly. "I'm going to go remind Mr. Vance who really owns this city."
