Chapter 2 - The Midnight WireThe hospital room went dead silent the second the door clicked shut behind the Vance family.

I didn't waste a single second. I swung my legs over the side of the hospital bed, holding a pillow tightly against my fresh C-section incision to brace against the sharp, biting pain.

I stood up, took three slow steps across the cold linoleum, and locked the room door from the inside.

The hospital social worker, a woman named Sarah, rushed over from the corner with a pale face. "Nora! What are you doing? You shouldn't be standing up so fast! And why did you sign those horrible papers?!"

"Sarah," I said, my voice steady and devoid of tears, "did you record the timestamp of when they entered and left this room?"

Sarah blinked, startled by my composure. "Yes, I logged it in the official hospital incident system. I also flagged the security video footage with campus safety. That was blatant coercion of a post-surgical patient!"

"Thank you," I said softly. "Now I need you to do me one more favor."

I reached under my mattress, pulling out a small, encrypted burner phone I had hidden there three days before going into labor. I dialed a speed-dial number.

It rang once.

"Nora?" a deep, authoritative voice answered. It was Marcus Vance—Julian’s estranged uncle and the chief rival shareholder of Vance Global Logistics, who had been ousted from the board three years ago after discovering Julian's father's corruption.

"Marcus," I said. "He took the bait. He just walked out of my room with the signed indemnity clause, surrounded by twenty family members."

Marcus let out a low, cold whistle. "The idiot actually brought twenty people into a hospital room to force a post-op mother to sign a fraudulent financial release?"

"On camera," I added. "With a social worker and nurse present as witnesses."

"That isn't just a voidable contract, Nora," Marcus said, his tone turning to razor-sharp steel. "That is felony extortion, coercion, and evidence tampering in a federal investigation. We have him."

"Where are the federal agents?" I asked.

"Special Agent Miller from the IRS Criminal Investigation Division and the U.S. Attorney's team are sitting in my office right now," Marcus replied. "We’ve uploaded the digital copies of the offshore account ledgers you gave us. They just issued emergency seizure warrants for Vance Global’s primary accounts."

Tears finally welled in my eyes—not of sadness, but of pure, triumphant relief.

"What about my boys?" I whispered, looking toward the bassinets where Leo and Oliver were fast asleep.

"A team of federal marshals and child protective agents will be at the hospital at 7:30 AM tomorrow," Marcus promised. "Thirty minutes before Julian arrives to 'collect' them. By the time your ex-husband steps foot into that lobby, he won't be taking your children. He'll be leaving in handcuffs."

"Thank you, Marcus."

"Don't thank me, Nora," Marcus said softly. "Thank yourself. You played them like a grandmaster."

I ended the call, tucked the burner phone away, and walked over to the bassinets. I reached inside, gently stroking Leo’s soft cheek and resting my fingers in Oliver’s tiny hand.

"Nobody is taking you," I whispered to my sons. "Not tomorrow. Not ever."
