Chapter 6 - The Desperate BeggarsWhen the double glass doors of the executive conference room opened, Eleanor Vance and Sienna Brooks looked like two women who had survived a shipwreck.

Eleanor’s mink coat was gone, replaced by a plain, wrinkled cardigan. Her eyes were red-rimmed and swollen from hours of weeping. Sienna stood beside her, wearing an oversized hoodie, no makeup, her hands shaking as she clutched a cheap canvas handbag.
The arrogant matriarch and the glamorous mistress who had stood over my hospital bed twelve hours ago, offering me $150,000 to vanish, were completely gone.
They stopped ten feet away from my sofa. Gabriel and Marcus stood behind me, their arms folded, projecting an immovable wall of authority.
"Nora..." Eleanor choked out, taking a trembling step forward. "Please... you have to help us."
I took a slow sip of my tea, not bothering to offer them a seat. "Help you with what, Eleanor?"
"The federal prosecutor... they refuse to set bail for Arthur or Julian!" Eleanor sobbed, dropping her expensive leather purse onto the floor. "The bank froze our personal credit cards this afternoon! I couldn't even pay the deposit for Julian’s defense attorney! They took the cars from our driveway!"
Sienna stepped forward, her voice rising in a frantic pitch. "Nora, please tell the federal agents that the hospital agreement was just a family misunderstanding! Tell them you agreed to the money! If Julian stays in jail, he'll lose his license! We won't have anything left!"
I looked at Sienna, marveling at the absolute delusion of the woman who had helped destroy my life.
"Sienna," I said softly, my voice cutting through her panic like a razor. "Twelve hours ago, you stood beside my bed while I was bleeding from surgery and told me my sons deserved a better mother. You smiled while Julian handed me a contract designed to steal my children and ruin my life."
Sienna swallowed hard, her face turning bright red. "I... I was just doing what Julian told me to do—"
"Shut up, Sienna!" Eleanor snapped, spinning on her mistress before turning back to me with desperate, pleading eyes. "Nora, my sweet girl... think of the boys! They need their grandfather and their father! If the Vance name is ruined, what legacy will Leo and Oliver have?"
I stood up slowly from the sofa, holding my posture straight despite the tightness in my abdomen. I walked right up to Eleanor, looking her dead in the eye.
"Their legacy won't be built on your stolen money, Eleanor," I said, my voice vibrating with absolute authority. "Their legacy will be built by a mother who fought your entire corrupt empire and won."
"Nora, please!" Eleanor dropped to her knees on the polished hardwood floor, clutching at the hem of my jeans. "Mercy! I’m begging you for mercy!"
I stepped back, pulling my jeans out of her trembling grip.
"You gave me no mercy when I was carrying those boys," I said coldly. "Gabriel, have security escort these people off the property."
Two large security officers stepped into the room, grabbing Eleanor and Sienna by their arms and escorting them out into the elevator lobby as Eleanor’s shrieks of despair echoed down the hallway.

I turned back to the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the city skyline as the sun began to set.
The battle for my children's future was over. And my new life was just beginning.
