Chapter 5 - The War RoomBy 2:00 PM that afternoon, I was resting on a velvet sofa inside Marcus’s private law firm headquarters on the top floor of a downtown skyscraper.

The room felt like a war room. Three large digital screens mounted on the mahogany walls displayed real-time financial charts, asset seizure logs, and news updates.

"VANCE GLOBAL LOGISTICS EMPIRE COLLAPSES: CEO ARRESTED IN FEDERAL FRAUD STING."

Photos of Julian in handcuffs were trending across every news portal in the country.

My lead family law attorney, Gabriel Vance—who was Marcus’s eldest son and a brilliant trial lawyer—sat across from me, laying out a thick stack of legal filings on the coffee table.

"Julian's criminal defense team filed an emergency bail application two hours ago," Gabriel reported. "They offered two million dollars in property collateral."

"Did the judge accept it?" I asked, taking a sip of warm herbal tea.

"Denied," Gabriel smiled tightly. "The Assistant U.S. Attorney presented the hospital video from last night alongside the evidence of his offshore shell accounts in the Cayman Islands. The judge ruled him an extreme flight risk. Julian is staying in federal custody at the county detention center until his preliminary trial."

"What about his parents?"

"His father, Arthur Vance, was picked up by federal agents at his country club forty-five minutes ago," Gabriel revealed. "He’s being charged as a co-conspirator in the wire fraud scheme. Their personal bank accounts have been frozen under a civil asset forfeiture order."

I leaned back against the plush sofa cushions, letting out a long, deep breath. The physical pain from my surgery was still present, but the overwhelming weight that had crushed my chest for six months was gone.

"Nora," Gabriel said, his tone turning serious as he opened a new folder. "Now we focus on the divorce and custody settlement. Because Julian tried to illegally extort your parental rights using fraudulent business releases, we are petitioning for sole legal and physical custody of Leo and Oliver, with zero visitation rights for Julian or his parents until a full psychological evaluation is completed."

"And the marital assets?" I asked.

"Under state law," Gabriel explained, "when a spouse conceals assets during a marriage using illegal means, the court can award up to one hundred percent of the hidden capital to the innocent spouse. We are claiming the three-million-dollar penthouse downtown, the family trust payouts, and fifty percent of Julian's remaining personal equity in Vance Global."

Just then, the conference room intercom chimed. Marcus’s assistant spoke through the speaker.

"Mr. Vance? Eleanor Vance and Sienna Brooks are downstairs in the lobby. They are begging for a ten-minute meeting with Mrs. Nora Vance. They say it's an emergency."

Gabriel looked at me. "Do you want security to remove them?"

I looked at my reflection in the dark glass window of the skyscraper, seeing a woman who was no longer timid, broken, or afraid.

"No," I said, a cold, sharp smile touching my lips. "Send them up."
