Chapter 3 - The Morning AmbushAt 7:15 AM the following morning, the morning sun broke over the city, casting bright golden light through my hospital room window.

I was fully dressed in a sharp navy sweater and jeans, my hair pulled back, standing beside two pristine baby car seats. Leo and Oliver were strapped in safely, wearing matching white onesies.
Beside me stood Special Agent Miller, three plainclothes federal marshals, and two uniformed officers from the city police department. Sarah, the social worker, stood near the wall holding a stack of certified medical and legal protection affidavits.
"They just entered the main parking garage," a guard announced over Agent Miller's radio. "Four vehicles. Julian Vance, Eleanor Vance, Sienna Brooks, and six family members."
Agent Miller turned to me. "Nora, you stay behind us. Let us handle the initial contact."
"No," I said calmly, stepping forward. "I want Julian to see my face when he realizes what he bought."
At 7:55 AM, heavy, arrogant footsteps echoed down the hallway outside.
The door swung open without a knock.
Julian strode in first, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, holding two designer baby carrier bags. Eleanor followed, draped in a mink coat despite the mild morning weather, accompanied by Sienna, who was holding a digital camera to film their "triumphant family moment."
"Alright, Nora," Julian barked, not even looking around the room properly. "Hand over the twins. The driver is waiting downstairs, and we have a press photographer waiting at the family estate—"
Julian froze.
His eyes finally registered the seven towering figures standing around my bed. He saw the gold federal shields pinned to Agent Miller’s jacket. He saw the black tactical vests of the U.S. Marshals.
Eleanor stopped dead in her tracks, her mink coat slipping slightly off her shoulder. Sienna dropped her camera, her mouth agape.
"What... what is this?" Julian stammered, his confident posture shattering instantly. "Who are these people? This is a private family matter!"
Special Agent Miller stepped forward, pulling a thick leather badge holder and an arrest warrant from his coat.
"Julian Vance?" Agent Miller’s voice boomed through the room. "I am Special Agent Miller with the IRS Criminal Investigation Division and the Department of Justice."
Julian’s face drained of every drop of color. "IRS? What are you talking about?! My legal team handled our corporate tax filings!"
"We aren't here about your tax filings, Mr. Vance," Agent Miller said smoothly. "We are executing an arrest warrant for Federal Wire Fraud, Money Laundering, Extortion, and Subornation of Perjury."
Sienna let out a sharp, terrified shriek. "Julian! Do something!"
"This is ridiculous!" Eleanor yelled, stepping up to shield her son. "My husband is the founder of Vance Global! You can't touch us! Nora signed a full liability release last night!"
"Mrs. Vance," Agent Miller replied coldly, gesturing to Sarah. "The release your son forced a post-surgical patient to sign under physical and psychological distress last night—while recorded on high-definition hospital security video—has been formally voided by a federal judge as an act of criminal extortion."
Julian spun around, staring at me with wide, terrified, bloodshot eyes. "Nora... what did you do?"
May you like
I took a step toward him, my posture immaculate, my voice as cold and clear as mountain ice.
"I didn't do anything, Julian," I said softly. "You did it all yourself. You just forgot that every time you lied to me over the last six months... I was taking notes."
