Chapter 7 - The Trial of Julian VanceFour months later.

The Federal Courthouse in downtown Manhattan was packed to capacity with news crews, financial analysts, and corporate onlookers.

The trial of Julian Vance and his father, Arthur Vance, had become the white-collar crime scandal of the year.

Julian sat at the defense table wearing an oversized gray prison jumpsuit. His dark hair was unkempt, his face hollowed out from four months in a federal holding facility, his former arrogance completely crushed. Beside him sat a court-appointed public defender who looked exhausted from trying to manage a hopeless defense.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing an elegant cream-colored suit, looking healthy, radiant, and strong. Beside me sat Marcus Vance and Gabriel.

"The prosecution calls Nora Vance to the stand," the Assistant U.S. Attorney announced.

I stood up, adjusting my jacket, and walked calmly down the central aisle toward the witness stand. Julian refused to meet my eyes as I passed his table; he kept his gaze fixed firmly on the wooden surface in front of him.

I took the oath, placed my hand on the Bible, and swore to tell the truth.

For the next two hours, under the brilliant questioning of the federal prosecutor, I delivered the definitive blow to the Vance empire.

I detailed how I discovered the hidden offshore shell accounts six months prior to my delivery. I presented the forensic digital copies of the double-entry accounting ledgers I had secured. And finally, the prosecution played the high-definition hospital security video from the night after my C-section.

The large monitors in the courtroom played the crystal-clear audio of Julian dropping the folder onto my bed, offering me $150,000 to vanish, while Sienna smirked and Eleanor demanded my children.

The jury watched the video in absolute, horrified silence. Several jurors shook their heads in disgust.

When the prosecutor finished, Julian’s public defender stood up, looked at the evidence boards, looked at the jury, and then looked back at the judge.

"No questions for this witness, Your Honor."

They knew any cross-examination would only make the jury hate Julian more.

Two days later, the jury returned with a verdict after less than forty-five minutes of deliberation.

Guilty on all counts.

The federal judge ordered Julian and Arthur to stand for sentencing.

"Julian Vance," the judge said, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "You operated a massive corporate fraud scheme, and when your crimes were on the verge of exposure, you engaged in a grotesque act of physical and emotional coercion against the mother of your newborn children."

BANG!

The judge slammed his gavel down. "I sentence you to fourteen years in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of early parole, and order full financial restitution of twelve million dollars."

Julian flinched as the U.S. Marshals stepped forward to snap heavy steel chains around his waist and ankles. As he was led away through the side doors toward the holding cells, he turned his head and looked at me one last time.

His eyes were filled with absolute despair, terror, and total regret.

I didn't gloat. I didn't smile. I simply sat straight, held my head high, and watched the man who tried to ruin my life disappear behind the iron doors forever.
