Chapter 2 - The Unspoken Secret

Evelyn frowned, looking between her pale son and me. "What on earth are you blabbering about, Laura? She's a child you brought home nine years ago from that filthy shelter network you volunteered for. A stray you insisted on raising!"

"She wasn't a stray," I said, every word dripping with absolute clarity. "Nine years ago, Richard came to me in tears, begging for my help. He had made a 'mistake' during a business trip to Chicago. An affair with a former colleague."

Evelyn froze. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out. Marcus and Tyler sat up straight, their eyes wide with shock.

"The woman passed away due to complications shortly after giving birth," I continued, staring directly into Richard's hollow eyes. "Richard couldn't face the scandal. He couldn't face you, Evelyn, or risk his standing in your prestigious family circle. So he begged me to pretend we were adopting an orphan through an private agency. I agreed to raise her as my own daughter to protect our family, on one condition: that he would love her equally."

I turned to look at Emma, whose big tear-filled eyes were fixed on me.

"For nine years," I whispered, "I raised Emma as my biological daughter in my heart. But Richard? He was so terrified of his own shame that he treated his own blood like a stranger in his home. He let his own mother emotionally abuse his biological child just to keep his pristine reputation intact."

Evelyn turned slowly toward her son, her face a mask of utter disbelief. "Richard... tell me she's lying. Tell me that... that girl isn't a Bennett."

Richard buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking silently. He couldn't utter a word.

"She is a Bennett," I said firmly. "More than that, she is my daughter in every way that counts. And today, I am taking all three of my children away from this toxic house."

I walked over to Emma, wrapped my arm around her trembling shoulders, and guided her toward the front stairs. "Pack your bags, sweetie," I murmured softly. "We're going home."
