Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

The next morning, an uninvited guest arrived at my cottage. Evelyn Bennett stepped out of a black town car, her posture stiff, wearing a coat that cost more than my monthly rent. She marched up the walkway and knocked sharply on the door.

I opened it, leaning against the frame. "Evelyn. You're far from your country club."

"Let me in, Laura," she demanded, attempting to push past me.

I blocked her path firmly. "You are not welcome in this house."

Evelyn's eyes narrowed into slits. "You've ruined my son. He called me this morning and announced he is relinquishing his claim to the family firm's board seat. He is abandoning his heritage—all because of your ridiculous crusade for that girl!"

"He isn't abandoning his heritage," I corrected her coldly. "He is finally growing a spine. He spent his entire adult life bowing to your cruelty, Evelyn. But it ends with my kids."

"She is an illegitimate child who doesn't belong in our bloodline!" Evelyn hissed, her composure slipping into unhinged anger. "She is a stain on this family!"

Before I could reply, a quiet voice spoke from behind me.

"I am not a stain."

Evelyn paused. Emma was standing in the hallway, wearing her school uniform, holding her backpack. Her voice wasn't shaking. Her hands weren't trembling. She stood tall, looking directly into the eyes of the woman who had terrorized her whole life.

"I used to think I was bad because you hated me so much," Emma said clearly. "But my mom taught me that love isn't something you have to earn from mean people. I have a family who loves me. You're just a lonely old lady."

Evelyn stared at the young girl, her face flushing crimson with anger and embarrassment. She opened her mouth to spit another insult, but Marcus and Tyler stepped up beside Emma, forming an impenetrable wall behind their little sister.

"Get off our porch, Grandmother," Marcus said quietly. "Or I'll call the police myself."

Defeated and stripped of her power, Evelyn turned on her heel and hurried back to her waiting car without another word.
