Chapter 4 - The Safe Haven

We moved into a charming, three-bedroom rental bungalow near the coast, funded by the savings account I had quietly built up over the past two years in preparation for my independence. It wasn't as luxurious as the Bennett estate, but the air felt lighter, untainted by judgment and cold expectations.
Within two weeks, the routine of our new life began to take shape. I resumed my full-time work as an interior designer, while the kids adjusted to their new school environment. Emma blossomed; without the dark cloud of Evelyn's harsh glare hanging over her every meal, her personality began to shine. She laughed more, painted vibrant watercolors, and bonded deeply with her brothers.
However, the peace was temporary.
One Tuesday afternoon, as I was finishing a client presentation, my phone rang. It was my attorney, Sarah Jenkins.
"Laura, we have a situation," Sarah said, her tone serious. "Richard’s legal team just filed a counter-motion. He is contesting the divorce terms, demanding full custody of Marcus and Tyler—and requesting a court-ordered paternity test for Emma."
I gripped the phone tightly. "A paternity test? Why?"
"His mother hired a high-profile family firm," Sarah explained. "They are attempting to claim that because Emma was brought into the marriage under false pretenses regarding her origin, your custody rights over her might be legally questionable. Evelyn wants Emma removed from the custody arrangement entirely to prevent her from inheriting any Bennett family estate assets."

My blood ran cold. "She wants to strip Emma of her family rights out of spite."
"They are playing dirty, Laura," Sarah warned. "We need to prepare for a heavy legal battle."
