Chapter 3 - Gathering the Pieces

The atmosphere in the house shifted from tense quiet to chaotic realization within hours. While Richard remained retreated in his home office with the door locked, Evelyn paced the living room, dialing phone numbers frantically, desperately trying to figure out how to manage the impending public fallout.

Upstairs, I helped Emma pack her clothing. She sat on the edge of her bed, clutching a worn stuffed bear I had given her on her third birthday.

"Mom?" her voice was barely above a whisper. "Is it true? Is Dad... really my real dad?"

I sat down beside her, taking her small hands in mine. "Yes, Emma. He is your biological father. But more importantly, I am your mother, and Marcus and Tyler are your brothers. Nothing will ever change how much I love you."

"Why did he hide me?" she asked, a tear slipping down her cheek. "Why did he let Grandma say those terrible things to me?"

"Because he was weak, sweetheart," I answered honestly. "He was afraid of admitting his mistakes, and he let his fear hurt the people he was supposed to protect. But you are brilliant, kind, and precious. You never deserved any of his cowardice."

Down the hall, my sons were packing their gear. Marcus, at seventeen, walked into Emma's room, followed by fifteen-year-old Tyler.

"Hey," Marcus said softly, sitting on the floor across from us. "We heard everything down there."

"Are you mad at me?" Emma whispered, ducking her head.

Tyler stepped forward and gave her a firm hug. "Mad at you? Emma, you're our sister. You've always been our sister. If anything, we're mad at Dad."

Marcus nodded grimly. "We're going with Mom. All of us. We stick together."

For the first time in months, a tiny, genuine smile appeared on Emma's face. We loaded our luggage into my SUV, leaving the grand suburban home—and the cowardly man inside it—behind us.
