Chapter 9 - Rebuilding

A year passed.
Life in our coastal town flourished into something truly beautiful. The ocean air brought a sense of peace we had never known in the cold halls of the Bennett mansion. Marcus graduated at the top of his high school class and received an acceptance letter to his dream university. Tyler made the varsity soccer team, his laughter echoing through our home every evening.
And Emma... Emma thrived. She took up violin lessons, excelled in her middle school art club, and developed a bright, confident laugh that filled every room she entered.
Richard kept his word. He stepped down from his high-stress corporate position at his mother's firm, taking a modest advisory role elsewhere. He began attending mandatory family therapy sessions once a month—not to push himself back into our lives, but to learn how to be a responsible, non-toxic adult.
He didn't force Emma to see him, but he sent her handwritten letters every month, never demanding a response, simply telling her how proud he was of her artistic achievements and how sorry he was for his past cowardice.

Slowly, very slowly, Emma began to read them. She hadn't called him "Dad" again, but the heavy weight of fear had vanished from her eyes whenever his name was mentioned.
As for Evelyn, she retreated into her grand mansion, isolated by her own stubborn pride. The high-society friends she had strived so hard to impress gradually drifted away, whispering about the woman who had traded her own grandchildren for a hollow sense of prestige.
