Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

As the trial date approached, the pressure on Richard began to take its toll. The local social circles, once filled with people who admired the Bennett family, began whispering. Rumors of the secret daughter and the cruel treatment had leaked—not through me, but through former household staff who had witnessed years of Evelyn's harsh behavior toward Emma.
Richard's firm began receiving inquiry calls from business partners concerned about his personal integrity and corporate reputation. In corporate wealth management, character matters.
One evening, while I was helping Tyler with his chemistry homework, the doorbell rang. I opened the door to find Richard standing on the porch, holding a single cardboard box. Rain fell lightly around him.
"Laura," he said, his voice cracking. "Please. Just five minutes."
I stepped back, allowing him into the foyer, but kept the door to the living room open. "What do you want, Richard?"
He set the box down on the floor. "These are Emma's baby photos. The ones... the ones my mother made me keep in the attic."
I looked at the box, then back at him, unimpressed. "Nine years late, don't you think?"
"I was a coward, Laura!" Richard suddenly broke down, dropping to his knees on the entryway rug. "I was terrified of losing my inheritance, of my mother cutting me off, of being cast out! She controlled everything—my career, my trust fund, my reputation. I thought if I just kept quiet, everyone would be happy!"
"Everyone except Emma," I said softly, standing over him. "She spent eleven years thinking she was unlovable because her own father wouldn't look her in the eye."

"I want to make it right," he sobbed. "I told my mother today that I'm dropping the custody battle for the boys. I told her I won't force Emma away."
"That's a start," I said guardedly. "But dropping a lawsuit isn't redemption, Richard. You broke that little girl's heart every day for nine years."
