Chapter 3 - The Secret Bloodline

The world spun violently around Maya. She collapsed into the thick leather chair behind the desk, her trembling hands clutching the fragile, yellowed papers. Clara Vance. Her mother had been a quiet, gentle woman who died in a charity ward when Maya was only ten. She had always told Maya stories of a beautiful palace with crystal chandeliers, stories Maya thought were just fairy tales meant to comfort a starving child.
They weren't fairy tales. They were memories.
Maya flipped frantically through the rest of the file. There were forged signatures, bank transfer records, and a sworn affidavit from a corrupted judge. Eleanor hadn’t just married into the Sterling wealth; she had orchestrated a hostile, illegal takeover of the Vance family fortune, stripping Maya’s mother of everything and throwing her onto the streets.
"Maya?"
The sharp voice of the head housekeeper echoed down the hallway. Panic surged through Maya’s veins. She shoved the documents down the front of her uniform, slammed the hidden drawer shut, and aggressively began dusting a nearby lamp just as the door swung open.
"What is taking you so long in here?" the housekeeper barked. "Mrs. Sterling wants the silver polished before noon!"
"Just finishing up, ma'am," Maya said, keeping her head down so the woman couldn't see the wild, terrified look in her eyes.
That night, alone in her tiny servant’s quarters, Maya spread the documents across her lumpy mattress. The fear that had paralyzed her for years was suddenly gone, replaced by a cold, searing fury. She wasn't a maid in this house. She was the rightful heir. Eleanor hadn't just humiliated her; she had stolen her life.
A soft knock on her door startled her. She hastily threw a blanket over the papers.
Julian slipped into the room, holding two cups of coffee. He stopped when he saw the fierce, burning look in Maya's eyes. It was a look he had never seen before. "What happened to you today?" he asked, handing her a cup.
Maya looked at Julian. He was a Sterling by name, but he despised his stepmother as much as she did. If she was going to survive this, she needed an ally on the inside.

"Julian," she whispered, her voice steady and lethal. "What would you do if I told you this house doesn't belong to Eleanor?"
Julian’s eyes narrowed. "I'd ask you how we prove it."
