Chapter 5 - The Turning Point

The wail of police sirens echoed through the manicured gardens of the estate. Maya was slammed against the marble wall, handcuffs biting viciously into her wrists. The elite guests whispered and pointed, their eyes filled with disgust. She looked frantically for Julian, but he was nowhere to be seen. Had he abandoned her? Was he part of the setup?

"You thought you were clever, didn't you?" Eleanor whispered, leaning in close as the police marched up the steps. "I know you found the papers, you little gutter rat. But who are they going to believe? A billionaire, or a thieving maid?"

"You stole my mother’s life," Maya spat, thrashing against the guards. "I will expose you!"

Eleanor laughed, a dry, evil sound. "You're going to prison. You'll never see your sick little sister again."

The police officers grabbed Maya’s arms, reading her Miranda rights. Despair washed over her. She had lost. Eleanor was untouchable.

"Stop right there!"

The commanding voice boomed through the grand foyer, silencing the crowd. Julian emerged from the security room, a sleek black tablet in his hand. He wasn't acting like the quiet, suppressed stepson anymore. He looked like a king claiming his throne.

"The maid didn't steal the necklace," Julian declared, walking straight up to the police officers. He held up the tablet, turning the screen toward the crowd and the cops.

On the screen, high-definition security footage played crystal clear. It showed Eleanor, alone in the coat room, slipping the sapphire necklace off her own neck and dropping it directly into the pocket of Maya’s spare apron hanging on the rack.

The silence in the room was deafening. Eleanor’s face drained of color, turning a sickly, ghostly white.

"That—that's doctored!" Eleanor shrieked, losing her composed mask entirely. "He manipulated the footage!"

"It's time-stamped and encrypted on the mansion's private server, which is currently being downloaded by my lawyers," Julian said coldly. He turned to the police. "Release her. If you want to arrest someone for filing a false police report and attempted framing, she's standing right there."

The officers hesitated, then unlocked Maya’s handcuffs. Maya rubbed her bruised wrists, her eyes locked on Eleanor.

Eleanor’s chest heaved. She pointed a shaking finger at the door. "Get out! Both of you! You are stripped of your inheritance, Julian! And you," she snarled at Maya, "if you ever step foot on my property again, I will have you killed!"

Maya stood tall, no longer shrinking, no longer afraid. "Enjoy the house, Eleanor," she said smoothly. "While you still can."
