Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Matriarch

Maya pulled a thick, pristine legal folder from her briefcase and slammed it onto the podium right in front of Eleanor.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Eleanor shrieked, her perfect facade crumbling into desperate, ugly panic.

"That is the original, unaltered deed to this estate, recovered from your Swiss accounts," Maya projected, ensuring every reporter in the room caught her words. "Alongside a signed confession from your former lawyer, Thomas Reed, detailing the forgery, the embezzlement, and the hostile theft of the Vance family fortune."

Flashbulbs erupted like a strobe light. The room descended into absolute madness. Reporters were shouting questions; board members were whispering frantically.

"Lies! All lies!" Eleanor screamed, swiping the folder off the podium. The papers scattered across the floor. "I built this empire! I am a Sterling! You are nothing but a filthy maid!"

"I am Clara Vance’s daughter," Maya said, her voice dropping to a lethal, chilling calm. "And I am the majority shareholder of the debt you accrued trying to hide your crimes. You are bankrupt, Eleanor. You own nothing."

A federal agent stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "Eleanor Sterling, you are under arrest for grand larceny, fraud, and the suspected murder of Arthur Sterling. You have the right to remain silent."

"No! Get your hands off me!" Eleanor thrashed wildly, her diamond necklace snapping, sending jewels clattering across the marble floor. The woman who had ruled with terror, who had thrown boiling soup on a helpless girl for a smudge on a glass, was reduced to a screaming, pathetic mess, dragged out of her own gala in front of the entire world.

Maya watched her go. She didn't smile. She didn't gloat. She simply felt the crushing weight of twenty years of suffering finally lift from her shoulders.
