Chapter 6 - Unearthing the Past

Exiled from the mansion, Maya and Julian set up a war room in a cheap, rundown motel on the edge of the city. The contrast between the billionaire's estate and the peeling wallpaper of the motel was stark, but Maya had never felt more powerful.
They had the forged deed, they had proof of the offshore accounts, but they needed the one man who could tie it all together: Arthur Vance’s old lawyer, Thomas Reed. He was the man who had facilitated Eleanor’s hostile takeover, and he had vanished off the grid twenty years ago.
"Eleanor is burning documents," Julian said, pacing the stained carpet, a phone pressed to his ear. "My contacts inside say she’s fired half the staff and hired armed mercenaries. She’s panicked."
"A cornered animal is the most dangerous," Maya replied, tracing the map on the table. She had spent the last 48 hours cross-referencing old property tax records. "I found him. Reed. He didn't flee the country. He’s living in a heavily guarded retirement community in upstate New York under a fake name."
They drove through the night in Julian’s nondescript sedan. When they finally breached the gates of the retirement community—bribing a sleepy security guard with a gold watch—they found Reed in a wheelchair, staring blankly at a television.
When Maya stepped in front of him, the old man looked as if he had seen a ghost.
"Clara?" he gasped, his withered hands shaking.
"Clara was my mother," Maya said, her voice hard. "And you helped Eleanor murder her future."
Reed broke down. Twenty years of guilt spilled out of him like a ruptured dam. He confessed everything. He told them how Eleanor had slowly poisoned Arthur Sterling to take control of his assets, how she had forged the Vance bankruptcy, and, most importantly, where the original, unaltered deed was hidden: in a safety deposit box in a Swiss bank, registered under a dummy corporation.

"I have the key," Reed wheezed, pulling a heavy silver key from a chain around his neck. "Take it. Destroy her."
They had the bullet. Now, they just needed the gun.
