Chapter 2 - The Paper FortressWhile emergency sirens echoed outside the Grand Wellington Hotel, the fallout inside the private holding suite was absolute.

Victoria stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, her white veil thrown carelessly onto a velvet chair. Her father, Harrison Sinclair, paced the room like a caged tiger, dialing his head corporate attorney.
"I want every asset evaluation halted!" Harrison roared into his phone. "I want every joint venture contract burned by midnight!"
Nathaniel stood near the fireplace, his tuxedo jacket discarded, his hands trembling slightly as he stared at the floor.
"Victoria, listen to me," Nathaniel pleaded, taking a step toward her. "It’s not what it looks like."
"Not what it looks like?" Victoria turned around, her laugh cold and hollow. "There is a pregnant woman in an intensive care unit right now wearing a wedding ring with your name on it dated three years ago! Did you or did you not marry her?"
Nathaniel swallowed hard, his jaw tightening. "I married her in a civil ceremony in Nevada three years ago. But it was a mistake! We were supposed to file for a quiet annulment months before I met you!"
"Supposed to?" Victoria stepped closer, her eyes flashing like steel. "Why didn't you?"
"Because my mother threatened to cut off my voting shares in Hayes Global if I brought a small-town girl into the family!" Nathaniel admitted, his voice cracking. "I kept Emily in a private estate in Vermont. I paid her living expenses! I was trying to resolve the legal paperwork without causing a public stock crash!"
"You didn't keep her in an estate to protect the stock, Nathaniel," Victoria said, her voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register. "You kept her hidden so you could use my father's political influence to seal your fifty-billion-dollar merger."
Before Nathaniel could respond, the suite door opened.
Nathaniel’s mother, Eleanor Hayes, walked in wearing a pristine sapphire gown, looking completely unbothered by the scandal destroying her family's name.
"Clean up your face, Nathaniel," Eleanor commanded smoothly, setting her gold clutch on the table. "The press is outside. Harrison, stop shouting. We have a crisis management team arriving in ten minutes."
"A crisis management team?!" Harrison spat. "Your son is a bigamist!"
"My son made a youthful indiscretion with an opportunistic girl from the countryside," Eleanor corrected coldly. "Emily Carter signed a non-disclosure agreement eighteen months ago in exchange for two million dollars. Whatever she claims happened today is a breach of contract."
Victoria stared at her mother-in-law-to-be with pure disgust. "She’s carrying your grandchild, Eleanor."
"She is carrying a liability," Eleanor replied without missing a beat. "And by tomorrow morning, our legal team will ensure that paper in Nevada is erased."
Victoria looked at Nathaniel, hoping to see him challenge his mother's ruthlessness. But Nathaniel just stood there, silent and passive, looking at the floor.

In that quiet moment, Victoria made her decision. She reached up, unlatched the seven-carat engagement ring from her finger, and tossed it into Eleanor’s champagne glass with a sharp clink.
"The wedding is over," Victoria declared. "And so is Hayes Global's merger."
