Chapter 3 - The Hospital RoomRain streamed down the dark glass of St. Jude Memorial Hospital's high-risk maternity ward.

Emily Carter lay in the sterile white bed, an IV line hooked to her hand and a fetal monitor ticking rhythmically beside her. Her face was still pale, but the color was slowly returning to her cheeks.

The heavy wooden door opened, and Victoria Sinclair walked inside.

She was no longer wearing her bridal gown. She wore a tailored black trench coat, her blonde hair pulled back into a sleek, professional bun.

Emily stiffened, pulling the white blanket higher over her chest. "Are you here to serve me with a lawsuit?"

Victoria pulled up a plastic chair and sat down beside the bed. She set a hot cup of tea on the bedside table.

"I came to see if you and the baby were alive," Victoria said calmly.

Emily looked down at her hands, tears welling in her eyes. "The doctors said it was severe exhaustion and elevated blood pressure brought on by stress. The baby is stable now."

"Why did you go to the hotel today, Emily?" Victoria asked softly. "You knew the press would destroy you. Eleanor Hayes controls half the media outlets in the city."

Emily let out a bitter, shuddering breath. "Because six months ago, Nathaniel told me he was going to tell his family about us. He said he was going to handle his mother. Then three weeks ago, I saw your engagement on the cover of the Wall Street Journal."

"He told you he was going to cancel it?"

"He stopped answering my calls," Emily whispered. "Two days ago, his mother's security guards showed up at my house in Vermont. They took my car keys, cut off my credit cards, and told me that if I left the property, they would ensure I lost full custody of my child the second it was born."

Victoria’s knuckles turned white against her purse. "Eleanor did that?"

"Nathaniel signed the authorization order," Emily revealed, pulling a folded sheet of paper from beneath her pillow and handing it to Victoria.

Victoria opened the document. It was a petition for emergency maternal incompetence, signed by Nathaniel Hayes's private legal counsel and co-signed by his personal trustee.

Victoria felt a cold knot tighten in her stomach. Nathaniel hadn't just been passive—he had actively authorized his mother’s legal team to ruin Emily to protect his marriage to the Sinclair family.

"They thought I would stay trapped in Vermont," Emily said, wiping her cheek. "I hitched a ride with a delivery truck in the storm just to get to the city. I didn't want his money, Victoria. I just wanted my child to be free of them."

Victoria looked at the trembling girl in the hospital bed, then looked down at the court petition in her hands.

For months, Victoria had believed Nathaniel was a visionary, a brilliant investor who treated her like an equal partner. Now she saw him for what he truly was: a coward hiding behind his mother's ruthless fortune.

"You're not going back to Vermont, Emily," Victoria said, standing up and opening her leather briefcase.

Emily looked up, confused. "What?"

"My family owns sixty percent of the commercial real estate in the capital," Victoria stated, pulling out a business card and a set of apartment keys. "And my personal legal team specializes in corporate exposure and family trust defense."

"Why are you helping me?" Emily asked, bewildered. "I ruined your wedding day."

"You didn't ruin my wedding day, Emily," Victoria said with a rare, cold smile. "You saved me from marrying a monster."
