Chapter 4 - The Boardroom AmbushForty-eight hours after the wedding collapse, the stock value of Hayes Global slipped seven percent in pre-market trading.

Inside the seventy-fifth-floor boardroom of the Hayes Tower, Nathaniel sat at the head of the long glass table. His eyes were bloodshot, his tie loosened, and three empty coffee cups sat beside his laptop.
Eleanor stood near the presentation screen, addressing six panicked board members.
"The PR team has released the official statement," Eleanor announced smoothly. "We are framing the incident as a coordinated extortion attempt by an unstable former employee. The Nevada marriage license was fraudulently registered, and our attorneys are filing an emergency injunction today."
"And what about Harrison Sinclair?" one board member demanded. "Sinclair Capital was supposed to provide the twenty-billion-dollar liquidity bridge for our European expansion! Without them, our credit rating gets downgraded by Friday!"
"Nathaniel is meeting Harrison for lunch today," Eleanor insisted, glaring at her son. "He will fix it."
Before Nathaniel could speak, the double glass doors of the boardroom swung open.
Victoria Sinclair stepped inside, accompanied by two senior partners from Vance & Sterling Legal—the most feared corporate litigation firm in the state.
Nathaniel stood up instantly, hope flashing across his face. "Victoria! You came."
"I didn't come for you, Nathaniel," Victoria replied flatly, throwing a heavy leather binder onto the center of the conference table.
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed. "Victoria, this is a private board meeting. You have no standing here."
"Actually, Mrs. Hayes, she does," one of Victoria’s attorneys spoke up, opening the binder. "As of eight o'clock this morning, Sinclair Capital transferred its entire debt holdings in Hayes Global to a newly formed entity: V-Sinclair Enterprises."
Nathaniel frowned, looking at his mother. "What does that mean?"
"It means," Victoria said, leaning her hands on the table and looking directly into Eleanor’s eyes, "that I now personally hold the thirty-two percent senior debt notes on your primary data centers. The ones you put up as collateral for the European expansion."
Eleanor’s face drained of color. "You can't call those notes due for another ninety days!"
"Unless," Victoria countered smoothly, "there is a material breach of ethical conduct by the Chief Executive Officer that threatens the financial stability of the firm."
She tapped a button on her tablet. The giant presentation screen behind Eleanor flickered to life.
Displayed on the screen were audio recordings and internal emails sent from Nathaniel’s private server over the last six months—documents proving that Nathaniel had used Hayes Global corporate funds to pay for Emily’s isolation estate in Vermont, as well as paying off security personnel to restrict her movement.
The board members gasped.
"This is corporate embezzlement, Nathaniel," Victoria stated coldly. "You used public shareholder money to cover up your secret marriage."
Nathaniel took a step back, staring at the screen in pure horror. "Victoria... please... don't do this."
"You have two choices, Nathaniel," Victoria offered, her tone sharp as broken glass. "Option one: You resign as CEO immediately, step down from the board, and hand over your voting proxies to an independent trustee."
May you like
"And option two?" Eleanor hissed, her voice trembling with rage.
"Option two," Victoria smiled, "is that I release these documents to the Securities and Exchange Commission at noon, file a formal asset seizure on your data centers, and let the federal government dismantle your family's empire piece by piece."
